Best of British

There's been much talk on Twitter today about buying British and how important it is to check the provenance of your clothes. While I completely agree with this, and do steer clear of fast fashion, I'm afraid my existing wardrobe is fairly global in its origins. Good for M&S then who are flying the flag with their Best Of British range. Not so long ago, M&S kindly asked me if I would like to trial one of their key wardrobe pieces and so I chose a pair of black brogues made in Northampton. The brogues are beautifully made and sturdy and available in white for spring/summer 2014 (above). In return, I have to take a pair of unwanted shoes to Schwop at the Marble Arch store. Another great initiative from M&S.

These Best of British Brogues are available with a tan sole.

Fellow blogger of a certain age, Grey Fox is a champion of the Best of British cause, has actually modelled the M&S collection and compiled a list of all the menswear brands who make in the UK. He's been encouraging me to do the same for womenswear, which I would like to but this is a big project and something that must be done properly over time. I may look into it in the New Year - manufacturers form an orderly queue (or leave a comment below). Oh how very British of me...

  1. Well done and thank you for taking this on. I've been asked many times to compile a Made in Britain womenswear list to match my menswear list, but this is obviously best done by a womenswear expert like you.

I look forward to seeing the result.

  2. I love the white brogues! I've been making notes about brands made in the US, and will also be beating this drum soon.

  3. Very, very cool shoes. It's great to support your country/region/neighborhood's wares and get the word out!

  4. I do like a good pair of brogues and if they're manufactured in the UK, even better. I try to stay clear of fast fashion, but even with pricier brands, it's never a given that they will have been produced in this country or at least not in some sweatshop which can make it difficult to shop. Good for M&S. xo

  5. I love the way M&S have introduced the "Made in Britain" range. They had some great Autumn/Winter pieces in the Marble Arch store and I also like the Spring/Summer range when I saw it. Slightly similar to Margaret Howell IMHO.
