That Is My Age: Flexipop! (and my top 10 eighties tracks)

Photo: Frank Baron

Flexipop! was a trashy, lighthearted music magazine in the early 1980s. Set up by journalist Tim Lott who now writes for the Guardian and his business partner/fellow editor/publisher, Barry Cain. Both of whom, despite recent comments on Facebook, I have never met. There have also been remarks made about my underwear, which I can guarantee is not that special. Anyhow. Now back online by popular demand, Flexipop! invited me to come up with my top 10 eighties tracks. Trying to distil a whole decade into 10 songs was quite tricky. Partly because musically it was such a diverse era and partly because I can't remember a lot of it. That really is my age. So far, my countdown (in no particular order) looks like this:

10. Temptation: New Order
9. The Killing Moon: Echo & The Bunnymen
8. Big Audio Dynamite: E=MC2

Stay tuned here for the rest of it - together with an insight into why these songs mean so much to me.

What are your favourite eighties tracks?

  4. I was a keen purchaser of Flexi-Pop in the 80s. Had no idea this was the work of Tim Lott. How funny that all these music writers are now all respectable journalists.

  5. I'd forgotten Flexi-Pop. Love this. I remember seeing Midge Ure in a Status Quo cover band. Now that is my age!

  6. Oh my. There is NO WAY I could condense the 80s into 10 songs, but I love your list so far and also Vix and Louise's additions! Can't wait to see the rest.

  7. Vix - the first gig I ever went to was Teardrop Explodes in Manchester! Bunked off school with my brother, it was fantastic.

  10. 'Wash my cotton socks I'm in the news...' such a good opening line.
This really got me thinking, but all that drinking and fab nights out on less than a fiver has somewhat dimmed my memory.
