Sophia Loren by Alfred Eisenstaedt |
As a student, I could handle the university's all-night film show. I'm not suggesting I had the stamina to go the full distance without a quick forty winks, but I had enough energy then to give it a go. These days when we visit our local cinema, Mr That's Not My Age knows to book the early evening screening. Any later than a 7.20pm start and I'm nodding off halfway through. So, I'm a little concerned about seeing The Stone Roses: Made of Stone tonight at Camden Lock's Night Market. Which is outdoors. With deckchairs. And doesn't kick-off until way after dark (hadn't thought about that). Staying awake isn't going to be easy, hence I'm following the Rocking Out/Rocking Chair guide to gigs, loading-up on caffeine and might even throw in a Berocca Boost. Though I can't even think about the past-my-bedtime journey home.
We went to see Alpha Papa the Alan Partridge film at the weekend. And I liked it. At one point I was properly laughing - uncontrollably so - at a series of silly comments that don't sound very funny now, so I'll leave you with my quote of the week. Alan Partridge on country music:
'It's just jilted spouses complaining whilst drunk - also known as dating when you're over 40.'
Partridge's PA Lynn. |
And isn't Lynn brilliant?
I'm the same way, can't stay awake late or even sit through multiple films. That line is hilarious!! Beautiful picture of Sophia. I could watch her read the phone book.
ReplyDeleteToo funny - I can't stay awake past about 9.30pm! I've just booked tickets to see Leonard Cohen at an outdoor venue in November, and likewise worried about staying awake - I'll be the one fast asleep on my picnic rug ...
ReplyDeleteYes, I do understand. For the fall season, we have switched our theatre subscription to matinees. The audience for Shakespeare is predominately gray anyway, at least in the afternoon, most of us will be awake!
ReplyDeleteWe did the outdoor cinema in Aix last Sunday - Divorce Italian Style, projected by a vintage reel-to-reel, in Italian with French subtitles. Started after dark, which is 9:30 here... we both may have snoozed just a bit in the gorgeous ambiance of the Pavilion Vendome gardens...
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to seeing this film...I'm glad you laughed uncontrollably so...nothing better :-)
ReplyDeleteEnjoy this evening...keep drinking the coffee!
Happy Weekend.
(How beautiful does Sophia Loren look in this photograph....)
I must to get around to seeing Alpha Papa. I haven't seen much of Alan Partridge, but the shorts look good and generally British comedy is up my alley.
ReplyDeleteI also saw Alpha Papa at the weekend, proper funny - I laughed a lot. I think you'd have to be familiar with the TV series to really enjoy it though.
ReplyDeleteI saw Night of the Demon, a fifties Brit horror, sitting on a cardboard box outside the British Museum (not quite what I had expected but great fun in the event). The BM featured in the film, which was introduced by its leading actress, Peggy Cumming, still elegant more than 50 years on.
