Iris Apfel the self-proclaimed 'geriatric starlet' was 92 this week and there was a lovely interview with whippersnapper Tavi in the
Daily Beast. When asked her advice on style and confidence at any age, the New York nonagenarian said:
'I think my taste has been polished and my eye improved but my basic tendencies are the same. Know yourself and know what you carry. If you're not comfortable no matter how well dressed you are you're not going to look right. I'd rather be happy and feel comfortable.'
Wise words.
She's been a favorite of mine for awhile. Style is less about fashion than it is about personal artistic expression. The women who are style icons are those whose clothing is an outward expression of who they know themselves to be. It's about self-awareness, not labels.
ReplyDeleteIris Apfel is who I would like to be when I grow up!
ReplyDeleteIris reduces the fear of aging and provides a role model for those of us who are younger than 92. Always an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI want to be a geriatric starlet when I grow up!
ReplyDeleteSeriously though, it's great advice and something I've found to be true. Style has to feel organic, like it's part of you.
Ageless!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful inside and out! Iris is an inspiration for tossing out the fear of aging ... for it is but only a number. Hpapy week-end. C.(HHL)
ReplyDeleteI'm SURE Iris is my "real" mother...she is a perfect example of how fashion can be fun...
ReplyDeleteMy MIL drives me crazy but I'll give her credit, when she does get up and put herself together, she can still do it quite stylishly. She's 86. She lives with us. The transformation from bedridden to made up, dressed, accessorized and hair styled is still in her hands. She's an artist so I've attributed her abilities to maintain a sense of style, color & trend to that. However, as I usually see her in a nightgown, no make up and such, I'm learning what a true effort is required.
ReplyDeleteIris Apfel is a true inspiration. Thanks for sharing this....
ReplyDeleteShe is fabulous, and helps me not be afraid of aging.
ReplyDeleteIris is a beacon of inspiration in our youth obsessed media.
