Catherine Keener in A Late Quartet

I like an old film. A film about old(er) people. And there have been a few of those lately: Amour, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Quartet. And so this week I decided that if I couldn't be in New York (I will stop going on about it soon, promise), I'd go and see a movie about the city. A Late Quartet is beautifully shot with scenes at the Met, the Frick Collection and around the reservoir in Central Park - one of my favourite NY places, I love going for a walk there. The story of what happens to a world-famous string quartet when the cellist is diagnosed with Parkinson's, and also more generally about life, collaboration, behaviour and ageing. The cast is pretty fabulous...

Christopher Walken and his gravity-defying hair, Catherine Keener, Philip Seymour Hoffman and that other fella. It made me think about what a brilliant actor Catherine Keener is. Low-key, natural and smart, she's appeared in some very fine films like Being John Malkovich, Out of Sight, Adaptation, Capote, The 40 Year Old Virgin. As the credits rolled, I noticed that her special wardrobe was designed by The Row: whippersnapper movie stars turned acclaimed fashion designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The clothes are simple, wearable and grown-up.

That's all really. It's a good film and I like Catherine Keener, and The Row.

  1. Sounds great! I remember thinking "oh no, more celebrities inflicting their *fashion* on us" when I first heard of The Row, but I have to say that their stuff is fabulous and I would love (if I could afford it!) to own quite a few of their pieces. In the meantime, I might just go and watch the film... ;-)

  7. Might try and catch this film. Interesting snippet on Keener's wardrobe. The Row do some wonderful things - shame about their price tags though!

  11. Ok, you got me. Both A Late Quarter and The Row weren't on my priority list but I can see the film on pay-per-view tonight. I tend to also stay away from actor designed fashion but was impressed with a number of innovative styles and they're at Barney's,NYC! Thanks.
