Michelle Obama is 50 today, Francoise Hardy is 70, and yesterday Kate Moss turned 40. Old is the new young. Having turned 50 myself a couple of weeks ago, gone are the wobbly, 'is-this-it?' days of my mid-forties, I feel happier in my own skin, more confident than my younger self and a lot more settled than I have done for some time. Thanks to other women online - I love blogging, it continues to be both an adventure and an education - as well as in the public eye: like Michelle Obama, Emma Thompson and Ines de la Fressange, midlife has been reinvented. Gone are the frumpy days of yore, now fifty really is fabulous. Obviously health, wellbeing and taking good care of yourself are important too, but as Oscar Wilde said, ' Everything in moderation, including moderation.'
To celebrate significant birthdays everywhere, here's what Michelle Obama's intelligence and intelligent approach to fashion has taught me:
1. The benefit of high-low dressing, and that J Crew is cool.
2. The importance of accessories, metallics and embellishment:
3. Simplicity is always chic.
4. Keep fit, have fun and hopefully there'll be more, more years...

And here's a link to a longer piece I was commissioned to write about Michelle Obama last year.
Now this is a birthday well worth celebrating. Michelle many happy returns. And to Francoise as well, joyeux anniversaire x
ReplyDeleteShe's so lovely, chic - and smart and strong. Happy birthday to Michelle, and Francoise, and Kate. I am looking at 60 and feeling great.
ReplyDeleteWomen over 50 are the new superstars embracing their lives with passion! Happy Birthday to all of these fabulous women!
ReplyDeleteGreat post on Michelle Obama, a first lady to admire and embrace for all that she brings to the world stage.
ReplyDeleteJust love her.
ReplyDeleteAnd Happy Birthday to you too! Welcome to the 50's! (It's been my best decade so far.)
ReplyDeleteI so agree with you...I'm loving my 50s I've grown into my own skin and I'm pretty happy with it and we have so many fabulous role models too :)
ReplyDeleteMichelle Obama looks great as do Ines de la Fressange, Emma Thompson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tilda Swinton...the list is endless...we're in good company!
Great post...have a good weekend xx
I'm into my 60s now and glad enough to be here. My 50s? A very good decade, and I wish you the same. Although perhaps we should take the years one day at a time . . . you've definitely made a good start on year 51. Happy Birthday!
ReplyDeleteShe is gorgeous! Not only does she wear her age well, she wears her clothes well and doesn't try to hide her pear-shaped figure. I love her attitude.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to you. Michelle Obama nails that confident look, I love her choice of bold colours.
ReplyDeleteShe looks fabulous doesn't she and rocking turning 50. I was a little surprised that KM turned 40 - how did that happen! Emma Thompson has transformed recently and looks her best ever. Yes, being older is the place to be these days - thankfully as I'm heading in the direction of 50 in a few years!!!

ReplyDeleteFor some reason, I just can't warm to her. Its probably not fair, maybe because so many people keep telling me I should idolize her and I'm just a stubborn girl.
Nice piece, TNMA, nice piece.
ReplyDeleteLoved this! Michelle has great style and I think she's a terrific First Lady. I agree that the older girls are the most stylish and attractive. You're wiser and you don't sweat the small stuff. Life's just better!
ReplyDeleteHave a good weekend!

Redefining middle aged style. Dying to know what she'll get up to after First Lady job ends. I suspect she'll shake things up somewhere, somehow.
ReplyDeleteShe looks incredibly good, and her stomach is so flat! She really looks fit, and happy.
ReplyDeleteShe's inspiring, all the way around. Enjoyed your article from last year as well. I wonder how she'll dress after the White House? Should be fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteshe does look fabulous!!
