Older models: The Gap #MakeLove campaign

Back in the olden days, when I worked in Magazine Land, I was asked to create a fashion shoot that looked a bit like a Gap/ Eileen Fisher ad campaign. Both brands were renowned for using a diverse range of models and my editor wanted something similar. Hoorah, I thought and immediately booked Daphne Selfe and another younger model - the results are here. Anyhow. I walked into a Gap store the other day and was pleased to see their fantastic #MakeLove campaign featuring an assortment of artists: Tony Bennett, the fabulous Waris Ahluwalia with film maker Quentin Jones, Nashville's Connie Britton and her adopted son Yoby, the wonderful Harry Belafonte with Q-Tip:

I kind of recognised the woman with the blonde hair and red lipstick, but didn't. So, I got home and checked online. It's 60-year-old Cyndi Lauper looking remarkably youthful - think she might have been through the Renée Zellweger experience:

Cyndi Lauper and Billy Porter

Shame there isn't a beautiful, natural-looking older woman to sit alongside Tony and Harry. Don't you think?

  1. I'm sorry, I lost the ability to think straight after a glimpse of Waris Ahluwalia, phwoar! xxx

  2. Your photo shoot was brilliant! And I have noticed these terrific new ads, although I too, did not recognize one of my idols, Ms Lauper.

  3. I'm with Vix.......oh, were you talking to me?

I love the photo shoot you put together, and I wish they hadn't photoshopped Cyndi into generic plasticity.

  4. Would be good, wouldn't it? Cyndi doesn't exactly look her 60 years, does she? Unlike Tony and Harry, who do, and who look amazing. xxx

  5. Oh dear, what has Cyndi done - don't see any of the men going to that length (generally) in order to be "socially acceptable". Sorry, tiny rant. Still, great campaign, but you're right, it would be great to see some slightly more naturally mature female faces... xo

  6. I am not a GAP shopper because I am not androgenous and have never been attracted to the tee shirt, boyish. mannish look that has now taken over their entire stock. With their clothing line so boring it would be fun if they came out of the box and used un photoshopped models that were not botoxed and filtered but do not look at the GAP to be fashion forward on any level.

  7. Gosh, what happened to Cyndi Lauper? I'm sure she didn't look quite so ironed out even earlier this year. Wonder if the airbrush has been employed as part of her contract?

I had a similar thought to yours about 'where's the real older woman' when watching Graham Norton a couple of weeks back... there was Robert DeNiro looking fabulous at 70 just as he is, then there was Michelle Pfeiffer and Jennifer Saunders looking tweaked... and then there was Cher....

  8. Love it! I'd love to see more older models everywhere. It seems we've made gains in the plus size area, but ageism is still alive and well in America.

  9. Yes, love the diversity here, but agree about having a woman like you used. That Daphne is gorgeous. Sadly men are perceived as more handsome as they age. We need to change the way we think about female aging as well!
