My latest blog post for the FT's How To Spend It website talks about fancy trainers 'sneaking into style'. Which as a lifelong sports shoe fanatic and champion of casual glamour, I'm delighted about. Posh sweatshirts, indigo jeans, luxe trainers – today, I’m just a more upscale version of my 15-year-old self. I guess that's what you call timeless style. Anyhow. This season's most-wanted has been the fabulous Givenchy skater shoe (I prefer this pattern to the Céline animal print) and if I had Jenna Lyons' bank account, I'd have a pair too. Interestingly, when I posted this image on Pinterest yesterday, Tiffany one of my loyal followers commented, 'Not a fan of no-bra...even on Jenna.' To be honest, I was far too busy admiring the fancy footwear to even notice her cleavage.
How do you feel about posh sneakers/trainers?
I'd immediately wear this outfit but with pumps... and a bra ;-)

ReplyDeleteWell I would add a bra, too!! I think it is a fun look - hasn't Lauren Hutton rocked this for years? Would we feel the same if it was cheap target sneakers and no Givenchy? I think so, not sure Jenna has been to Target for awhile...
ReplyDeleteIt can be a cheap sneaker (@WMM) but then they have to be pristine (Cons, Superga etc). In fact, I think the only way these streetwear pieces really work is when there's an equal mix of casual and glamour. IE, everything ironed, or hair properly coiffed, or a posh watch/lipstick, or the face of a 21-year-old. Once everything is creased and crumpled I thing it loses some (most) of the magic... No?
ReplyDeleteAgree with Disney - cheaper trainers are fine but everything else has to look pretty slick.
ReplyDeleteAgree with Disneyrollergirl, and I'd add that it helps to be strikingly tall and thin (a la Lyons) to boot. The sneakers don't undercut the formality of what she's wearing as much as add a witty comment.
ReplyDeleteI actually like the no-bra look ( I am aware it does not work for everyone ) it is a refreshing change from the "pumped up" look that is so prevalent. The whole ensemble is wonderful, but as someone else mentioned, it doesn't hurt being tall and slim.
ReplyDeleteAgree, the rest of the look needs to be reasonably polished (though not stiff) and the sneakers need to be pristine. (BTW, for those of you Converse wearers, the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works wonders on the white toe caps and around the sides.)

ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of simple styles in luxe fabrics, but the shoes just don't do it for me.
With heals this outfit will be much more formal with sneakers it is more relaxed and fun and less predictable, in my humble opinion.

Totally love the look and I'd wear exactly the same - lots of classy navy and some bright trainers. I would, however, draw the line at the low cleavage - a bra and a t-shirt with a higher neckline (or should I say a neckline full stop) would be a far better choice I think... x
ReplyDeleteI agree with The Gardener's Cottage. This whole look is wrong on so many levels. I don't care how rich or thin you are. One of my major beefs, however, is with the glasses. Everyone is wearing them, and everyone who wears them looks as if they have a Groucho Marx nose. Why do people persist is wearing what's trendy, even when it looks terrible on them. Just shows how insecure even people like Ms. Lyons are.
ReplyDeleteI think she rocks it impeccably. If she walked into a room, there's no doubt it's an impressive and empowered look. I love it! It would work with beach hair too, as long as everything else was as impeccable as it is here.
ReplyDeleteI love the look, don't like the shoes one bit. A pair of tieups of some sort would do it for me. I wouldn't insert ballet flats either - if you're going for womanly menswear then take it all the way down to the foot.
ReplyDeleteAro ( arm of the slightly weird Vialis Barcelona) does some gorgeous trainers.Im short: I love my Swedish clogs. I read somewhere they give you height without looking stupid. Even so I wouldnt wear either with this ensemble. Cute glasses though.

I think she looks great.Very together outfit in total.Love plimsolls or sneakers (Bensimmon or Emma Hope, mostly).And the glasses.I remember a post you did a long time ago with a Wes Anderson sort of look and I often have that in mind.(don't care if I'm shallow).

I think part of her job is to create some kind of comment about her outfits. Don't like trainers with tuxedos nor the braless look. Please, I have seen enough cleavage (pumped up or not) in recent years to last me a lifetime. And what's up with those glasses?
