What to wear to a health & fitness bootcamp

I'm away for a few days at a health and wellbeing bootcamp, more of which at a later date, suffice to say that  it's day two and I'm hungry and exhausted. As this is the first time I've ever done anything like this, I am also ashamed about my tatty sports kit. The 10-year-old black leggings that I've been happily wearing for cycling and Pilates suddenly feel shabby, and I'm the only person wearing the complimentary fuchsia  bootcamp t-shirt. If this wasn't embarrassing enough, I've just received the following email from a new reader asking for fashion advice:

'I am 59 and floundering about what to wear for the gym and for outdoor bootcamp. Not really liking my current black leggings and fluoro T shirt (bought in sale) combo. If there is something I could look at on your blog, maybe you’d be kind enough to advise.'

I kid you not. This is either the biggest coincidence in history, or a practical joke by one of my fellow bootcampers. If it is a coincidence, thank you Marion for  your email, do excuse my paranoia, I will get back to you on my return. In the meantime,  I will surreptitiously check out my fellow bootcampers and try to determine if there is a prankster in the house. And, tell you what I wish I was wearing:

As this is a re-set retreat, designed to encourage participants to de-stress and detox, activities include swimming, Nordic walking and Pilates, I wish I had kitted myself out in Hush. Mandy the owner is a real yoga bunny and so the daywear collection has a lovely relaxed feel:  'I love to be comfortable in my clothing. If it digs in, falls down, or generally reminds me that I have it on...I don't wear it.'

Whilst this is not yoga/sportswear per se, it's the kind of versatile clothing that's chic enough to hang out in at the weekend, and relaxed enough for Pilates. And yes, I am such a lazy sod, that I often go to class in whatever I'm wearing at the time. Without changing. So Hush suits me down to the ground. There are lots of simple t-shirts and Sloppy Joe sweatshirts, and a good selection of harem pants and slim-leg joggers. My outfit of choice would  either be the jersey camouflage pants and grey sweatshirt (above), or the camouflage Sloppy Joe and charcoal pants below.

I also like Mandy's philosophy, 'Try and fail but don't fail to try.' I shall be repeating that to myself later this evening, when a midnight raid on the kitchen feels like a good idea.

  1. Oh my, that sounds horrid. Being tortured without even the right garb - I hope it pays off ... I do like those harem pants.

  2. lol at the thought of a "prankster in the house"! I too really like the harem pants, though I see no problem with well-loved leggings.

  3. Worrying about how fashionable you look while you're trying to take care of your health and body sounds counterproductive. I wouldn't want to do laps in rags, but on the other hand, there's nothing wrong with 10-year-old leggings and a neon shirt if they're comfortable. More important is having the right footwear to prevent injury, a supportive bra if you need it, or nonbinding pants for activities like yoga.

Good for you for doing this bootcamp!

  4. I joined a fitness center last week...so far, I am embarrassed everytime I walk in the door. I am the only one in any T shirt...all others are in tanks of some sort. OH well, I am there to look better in the fun clothes...not to look better in the workout clothes.

  5. I've just enrolled in a pilates class and haven't got a thing to wear. I couldn't possibly turn up in any of my assorted faded joggers. Working from home, they are my morning uniform and by golly, have they seen some action. I'd love those HUSH camouflage print pants but there's something about the "rise" at the front. Far too low for me. Having made my own jersey pyjamas, I know that Ready to Wear jersey-type trousers won't compare with my custom fit pattern. Now that I'm older I won't compromise on things that don't fit well whereas, when younger, I suffered for my style. Sometimes I feel that my new found knowledge is a curse as well as a blessing. (Deep sigh - still love those camouflage keks!)

  7. Diana - Oh I completely agree. And you'll be pleased to hear I do have proper trainers and a decent sports bra.

  8. I'm a sport aficionado and like to do it in style. Here are a bunch of cute things to wear to work out in or to do time at a bootcamp. Scroll down to the end because it's all very different.

  11. I recently started Pilates again after about a 13 year break. Naturally I needed new outfits! I bought black yoga pants, capris, and shorts at Target. The capris are too sheer, I've discovered! The others are ok. Then I got a couple of cap sleeved tops at Gap,in their athletic line. Quite like those. Once I whip my arms into shape (is that even possible, in my mid-fifties?) maybe I'll move to tanks.

  12. Hilarious! But not so much when it's actually happening to you.
My Copenhagen based friend says they are very professional about all this over there too so might be worth investigating.

  14. Lulamon is the answer! Not cheap, but really well made - great choice of style of bottoms which wash like a dream. Lovely choice of colours and styles - and support for tops.

  16. Hi. Love your blog! I found it through Keep It Chic. I also love to pin images (intrigued with the photo of the camo pants and white tank!) from your pages, but I'm unable to do so anymore. Have you made changes to prohibit pinning?

  17. Oh my... I am laughing so much at this post.... ! Hope it wasn't a mean "mole in the camp" who emailed you... Alyson - you always look good and I expect you rocked the pink Tee and leggings look too. Love the photographs - I think HUSH is great and have bought several things from them online.. Their pjs are wonderful too. S x

  18. Hello Ginger - thank you! I haven't changed anything, oh but I had problems pinning that image too - I think there's something wrong with that photo (?) Do please keep pinning!

  19. My favorite part about this gym so far is the other members. There are no meatheads and no grunters. Also, I haven't seen anyone take just ogle at themselves in the mirror and flex like I saw at Club Fitness. Adult weight loss camp for adults

  20. ...And then you don't tell us which gym you're talking about, Michael? Good grief.

I just started a 3 week go at CFS down in Florida... It's pretty cool so far - and everyone else is dressed just as awkwardly as I am!!

    Super refreshing, LOL

You should check them out, CFS weight loss camp. Maybe I'll run down to the store and see if I can find something a little more stylish to wear tomorrow.
