On my short blog break over the weekend, I got to see the world premiere of Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth. An incredibly moving documentary about the writer/activist's life, directed by Pratibha Parmar, and part of the Women of the World festival. This was the first time 69-year-old Walker had seen the finished version. Yep. She was there too. And though we didn't share popcorn, I'd like to think we shared a sisterly moment.
Then it was a quick dash over to the Royal Festival Hall to see 80-year-old Petula Clark performing Downtown live. One of my friends was delighted to be singing in the choir, and though she admitted that belting out the chorus with a massive grin on her face wasn't easy, I think she did an excellent job. It was such an emotional evening - tears, laughter, bad dancing - it felt like the Olympics all over again.

There's been a lot of talk of feminism lately - how it's cool again and why we need to reclaim the F-word. And whilst I enjoyed seeing these two strong women doing their own thing, I think we need to support Women of the World every day of the year. Surely that's what feminism is all about? Well, that and equal pay, opportunities and representation. Now can somebody please tell the government?
Love the part about reclaiming the F-word!
ReplyDeleteYes, the F-word is never out of style. (and please, can someone tell the government/s!) I love Petula.
ReplyDeleteA late feminist bloomer here. Better late than never:).
ReplyDeleteTell the government WHAT, exactly?
ReplyDeleteThat women who have never had children are paid MORE than men in the same circumstance? "Equal Pay" has been debunked so many times it's laughable to pretend otherwise.
Representation? Women have been the majority voters since they elected REAGAN in the '80's. Women haven't been able to use their majority voting power to represent themselves since the '80's?
Opportunities. Oh, my. What opportunities do men have that women don't in THIS day and age? Combat duty? Forced registration for Selective Service? Please let me know what I'm missing here.
