Grown-up style: The Oscars 2013

If I ruled The Academy, Emmanuelle Riva would've picked up an award last night. At 86, Riva is the oldest woman to be nominated for Best Actress - and much as I liked Argo, Amour was easily my favourite film. The Parisian veteran was superb, as was her co-star Jean-Louis Tritignant. I'm surprised he wasn't even nominated, wouldn't have happened on my watch. I was however pleased to see the fabulous Jennifer Lawrence picking up a gong, though if I was Queen of the Oscars she'd have been recognised in 2010 for Winter's Bone. Anyhow, now for the important stuff... didn't Riva look stunning in her navy blue Lanvin gown? Trés, trés chic. Did you notice who else was wearing navy blue?

Yep. The best actor, ever, Daniel Day Lewis. And let's have a round of applause for Rebecca Miller who was doing her bit for dresses with sleeves.

Who were your Academy Award winners?

  1. I agree Emmanuelle should have won. She was magnificent in Amour. She looks stunning, navy is so much more flattering when you are older. I wish more designers offered navy as an alternative to black.

  2. Shame on me, I didn't watch it... Just catching up with the dresses etc. on the Guardian website. Loved Anne Hathaway's dress - so elegant and simple. Emmanuelle Riva looks absolutely stunning, is it too much to hope to look like this one day? xo

  6. I loved that Rebecca Miller was wearing her glasses during DDL's speech. Hooray for us bespectacled gals! I'm embarrassed to say that I haven't seen a single one of the nominated movies. Emmanuelle Riva looks stunning there.

  7. We - or at least me over here in the north, are not shaken by the Oscar Gala.
But Lady Riva looks elegant, no doubt about that.

The man actor - are his pants a bit too short?
I like the hairstyle of the lady beside her, no waterfalls ; ).

  8. You're right! Emmanuelle was a vision and an inspiration. I haven't seen Amour yet, but it's on my list. I'm about ready to get back into 'movie going mode.'

  9. I'm with you on what would happen if I ruled the Oscars. And I have to comment on Rebecca Miller, who is one of the most elegant and classically beautiful women ever.

  10. I fell for DDL back in the My Beautiful Laundrette Days. I can't believe the Academy loves him almost as much as I do- handsome, talented and genuine- I'm glad he's a record breaker- he is certainly a keeper!

  11. She did look amazing!! DDL has such class, his speech was wonderful.
I'm with Deja, I've not seen any of these films but I certainly will see select ones now.

  12. Mette's comment about DDL's pants made me laugh. I think that one pant leg looks short because he put his hand in his pocket.

Now I can't wait to see Emmanuelle in Amour.

    Jane always looks great.

  13. I found Rebecca Miller one of the most gorgeous women at the fest last night. Her husband is not the dog's dinner either, eh?

  14. The colour of DDL's suit sparkled and immediately made all the other bog standard dinner jackets look very dull. On the other end of the spectrum: Jack Nicholson. Whose jacket was that? It was at least two sizes too large. Someone needs to do a fashion intervention.

  16. Loved Rebecca Miller's dress - well I would have as my only 'party dress' is a shorter version type of this one.. well, fairly similar! Emmanuelle Riva - so elegant. x

  19. Love, love, love Rebecca's frock. Black lace sleeves can work wonders for bingo wings (not that she looks as if she needs any help in that dept)
