The best corner shop in town

This is Fourth Floor. One of the best places to get your haircut in London. I know. I was a customer here for years and only moved on when my hairdresser left to set up her own business. In my experience, when you find someone who wields a pair of magic scissors, it's best to stick with them.

Based in an old 1930s warehouse in Clerkenwell, it's the 20-year-old brainchild of Richard Stepney. And as you can imagine, the atmosphere is cool, calm and not-too-perfectly coiffed. This autumn, one floor of the salon has been given over to a Corner Shop and so I'll be paying Fourth Floor another visit. I'm very fond of a local convenience store, but we're not talking cheap booze and Cadbury's chocolate, this is a proper grown-up shopping emporium. A handful of local designers and businesses from around the Lambs Conduit Street/Bloomsbury area - including some of my personal favourites: Darkroom (gorgeous bags and jewellery), Folk (laidback fashion for men and women), Persephone Books (independent book store) and The Espresso Room (top-notch coffee) - have set up shop in the salon, and will be showing their wares from now until the end of December.

Darkroom accessories and homewares.

Folk knitwear and accessories.

If like me, you're partial to a calm, carefully curated shopping experience, you'll love this.

The Fourth Floor Corner Shop is open 9am - 7pm, Monday to Saturday.
4 Northington Street, London WC1.
