Party On: it's the Oscars

That's Not My Age may not have been invited to the Oscars but back in the olden days when I worked on women's magazines, I organised and styled this photo shoot at one of the location houses used in the King's Speech. Lionel Logue's office is number 33 Portland Place, an old eighteenth century London townhouse hired out for films, events and fashion shoots. And as anyone who's seen the film knows it's quite dark and distressed inside...

We didn't have a huge amount of lighting and had to shoot in the doorways and by the windows in order to see the model's face.

Anyway, that's more than enough trumpet-blowing for one day, That's Not My Age is excited to see what the fabulous Tilda Swinton wears this evening. She looked brilliant in Jil Sander at the Golden Globes and Haider Ackermann at the Baftas:

The director of one of Mr TNMA's favourite films, Debra Granik/Winter's Bone has not been nominated for an Academy Award which is a disgrace, but I'm not going to bang on about sexism in the film industry right now. When asked what she'd be wearing, Granik replied, ' I was hoping to get some non-designer, one-size, burka-style outfit that I could climb inside. Then I could watch the whole thing through the peepholes.'

What would you wear to the Oscars?

  1. Yes, Tilda nearly always looks great...with her very own sense of style

  2. That shoot looks so modern! Seriously. The neck frill action? And I loved Tilda's white and cream action. Loved it. I wonder what I would wear to the Oscars, if I went. I think a completely plain, long sleeved like a tee shirt to the floor, sky blue matte satin dress that I'd have made for the occasion. Maybe a slight tightness at the hips. With a family gold and diamond cuff. Cut my hair short, or wear it up. Then everyone would ask if I was in Calvin Klein or Jil Sander and I'd just smile.

  3. I haven't seen the film but I've been ogling that room and it's wonderfully distressed walls each time they show a clip on the TV.
Tilda always looks gorgeous, a breath of fresh air. I much prefer the eccentric and the odd to the immaculately groomed and botoxed to buggery. xxx

  4. Loving Tilda in that ensemble. And the dog in your shoot. I thought I hated dogs but I seem to have softened with age. Damn.

  5. I think I'd find Tilda interesting in just about anything. The director of Winter's Bone should show up in a plaid flannel burkha. And let's see, I would wear an unremarkable black frock.

  6. I want to be Tilda Swinton when I grow up. I'd need her wardrobe too (and probably her height and bone structure would help).

  7. How crazy that you worked at that locale!

I once wore this to the Oscars: http://wendybrandes.com/blog/2007/09/butt-bows-iz-back-in-fashun/

  8. Hilda always looks elegant.

    Helen Mirren looked amazing.

Today is my 1st day of leave and I am so bored.

I know Portland Place. So handy to that big maternity hospital etc.

    Your shoot was GORGEOUS.

I'd wear something very very glam to the Oscars. With Giant jewels. Maybe something colourful. With an updo. In this fantasy I am not pregnant.

  9. An amazing photo shoot TNMA... love it and the setting. Tilda looked particularly lovely in the cream and white. Would probably wear something by Armani if I went to the oscars with restrained but glitzy adornment! And re the trouser dilemma - have you looked at Cos this season? They often do a good cigarette pant if I remember rightly. XX

  12. Your two pictures are the best! I have not followed the Oscar Gala ever, the names mentioned are unknown to me, and all the dresses..

  13. I would wear something COMPLETELY over the top - to get the column inches in the media :-)

I would be the John Galliano of the Oscars - minus the anti Jew sentiment and moustache. Actually, I'd better delete that bit about the moustache.

  14. Would wear a posh suit like Tilda rather than a frock with it all hanging out - would feel more me in the suit.

  15. I've always admired Tilda's style, she's fabulous.

I've been to lots of parties at 33 Portland Place, it's a great house.

God knows what I'd wear to the Oscars but it would be something black, red or gold.

I was going to stay up and watch the Oscars but I fell asleep. Hope you had a good weekend xx

  18. LPC - I know I said back in the olden days but it was probably only about 10 - 12 years ago! I like your thinking - slinky dress and short hair sounds perfect.

Vix - Botoxed to buggery, love it! Think I might have to use that one.

FF - Helen Mirren did look amazing, and pregnant Natalie Portman looked gorgeous too!

Ali - probably be better if you were the Vivienne Westwood of the Oscars (with or without knickers!)

  20. TNMA, totally off topic, but Spouse seems to be having a Man Crush on Brian Cox - 'OMG', he said while watching telly this evening, 'this science guy is fantastic, just one of the best presenters I've ever seen'. 'Oh', I said casually, 'everybody loves him'.

  21. Tiffany - everybody does love Prof Brian Cox and he's got a new series starting this Sunday. Woo ho!
