Fashion Bin: The Sleeveless Jacket

There are some things I don't see the point of like Top Gear, goji berries and Cheryl Cole. They don't inspire me or make me laugh, and a superfood, rich in vitamins and antioxidants that tastes like bits of old carpet has just got to be wrong. When it comes to pointless fashion, the sleeveless jacket is hard to beat. Layering is a wonderful thing but I'm talking luxury fine knits not blazers-without-sleeves. That's Not My Age has never seen a stylish person in a sleeveless jacket, ever. And that's because they are try-hard and fussy and not at all easy-to-wear. I want fashion to simplify my life not constrict my armpits on a hot summer's day. Whether it's vintage Gaultier, the latest Stella McCartney or good old M&S, the sleeveless jacket has no place in a grown-up woman's wardrobe. But fortunately, there's plenty of room for it in the fashion bin....

Would you wear one?

  1. I agree. Why burden a tee with lapels? Alternatively, why cripple a jacket by hacking off all the sleeves?

  2. Well no I wouldn't, as I remember some wise TNMA advice about hailing taxis while wearing just such an item. A horrible repressed memory seems to be trying to force it's way to the surface that maybe I have worn one in the distant past. Squeezing nasty memory back down where it belongs, ah that's better.

  3. A simple vest/gilet seems the more elegant choice. Plus, I wear jackets partly to cover the top of my arms--important for my age (38), I think--so this would not find its way into my closet.

  4. Actually, I bought one in a thrift last summer in a sort of tan linen. I can see how it could easily dress up a simple summer dress. I've worn it on my blog as a top with shorts.

It interests me because in the 1940s American women often refashioned their husbands old suits to achieve a new look.

  5. Couldn't agree more. Hideous things.

  6. I would definitely NOT buy one TNMA. That area immediately next to the underarm is never attractive and the whole up and down straightjacket vibe isn't appealing either. I agree with Aesthetic Alterations (whom I have to check out) that a gilet would look much better. R. x

  7. i don't get it either. no, i wouldn't wear a sleeveless jacket. i probably would have once upon a time but now i want my clothes to be functional, versatile AND beautiful.
if you're going for a sleeveless jacket, why not just do a vest instead? :)

  8. Oh good lord. No. Absolutely, positively, not for a million dollars. N.O.

  9. I don't like sleeveless garments, partly because my grandmother (who died about 20 years ago) used to wear them all the time and somehow I see that as her thing, not mine. But I do wear tank tops now, with cardigans over them, so theoretically I might wear a really nice sleeveless jacket. As long as I also wore something with sleeves underneath.

  10. I don't think I would wear one because it's kinda shapeless and wouldn't do anything for my bust. I'd rather wear a t-shirt and a soft waistcoat.

Plus, I like to keep my bingo-wings a secret!

  11. isn't a jacket without sleeves a waistcoat? and I agree about TG - 3 overgrown schoolboys with too many unsavoury opinions and an odd sense of humour (i.e. unfunny, slightly offensive most of the time)

  12. LPC - too right. The sleeveless jacket will burden and cripple any wardrobe.

Claudia - Glad you've been paying attention, and banish those nasty memories!

Terri- - oh yes, hadn't thought of the make do and mens angle.

Projectforty - yes a sleeveless jacket is just an ugly oversized waistcoat.

  13. Oops Terri, I meant make do and mend!

  14. Couldn't agree more. Hideous and useless. I've wondered for a long time who wears them....

  16. Surely if anyone really wanted such a hideous and pointless thing they could just cut the sleeves off a charity shop jacket? In fact I'm almost tempted to do that and see if some fool buys it on eBay. xxx

  17. Love the fashion bin being back! Agreed on the sleeveless jacket , very ageing and agreed on the list - especially Top Gear ( once it made me laugh now...) goja berries I quite like but I like mulberries too - equally carpet like, I have strange tastes so you are right and I guffawed like a good 'un over Cheryl Cole

  20. Very funny post! I have to admit that Top Gear on the rare occasions I catch it is a guilty pleasure and I'm ashamed to say I own one sleeveless jacket which I bought from Zara absolutely years ago. It's brownish black linen and has frilly angel sleeves that stand up! It sounds more hideous than it is honestly! Saying that, I've never ever worn it. I did try it on briefly when I went through my wardrobe and it looked alright but it's still not had an outing so that doesn't say much. Hope all's good with you xx

  21. Well said! I really don't get this one...

  22. No! Can't understand why they keep cropping up.

  23. Throw some sleeves on it and i would! A pair of matching pants to make a suit would be nice too. Agree on the sleeveless version...would never go there and I don't get Top Gear either :)

  24. Ha ha, I'm delighted the fashion bin is back but quite liking sleeveless jackets. Agreed, not v practical for real life but quite nice for my imaginary lady-of-leisure one.

  25. Actually, Vintage Vixen is spot on, Vogue featured some excellent charity shop tweed jackets with hacked off sleeves in More Dash Than Cash a while ago. They looked fab.

    ReplyDelete
  26. No, really don't like them and can think of far more worthy winners on which to spend my $$. And as for Top Gear - well - depression reigns here (from me) when Mr SE watches it!! X

  27. Vix - oh go on! Please create a 'More dash than cash' sleeveless jacket and wear it on your blog.

Rollergirl - next time I see you I'm expecting hacked off sleeves!

  28. Agreed! I'm not big on layering (unless it's REALLY cold), as I'm big busted and just end up looking bulky. As I guess is obvious from my website, I'm sleeves all the way!
