What to wear to survive these chilly, spring mornings and the clammy commute home? It's tricky, I know. Bumped into a friend today who had resorted to Uniqlo Heat Tech under her animal print blouse and there I was braving the Birkenstocks. It was way too cold to go sockless first thing, but you should've seen me basking in toe-twiddling glory on the return journey. Though admiitedly, the armful of bags and coat hanging from the crook of my elbow, let the side down a bit. So, I've been thinking about solving my commute conundrum with this statement sweater from Toast. And not just because it keeps popping up in the advertising box thingy over there on the right. No. The chunky cotton Tess Sweater (£165, available HERE ) has a chic, Norwegian Beatnik vibe and could be slung on over everything: jeans, patterned trousers, a pencil skirt - as beautifully demonstrated by Vogue's fashion director Lucinda Chambers (above) - and then rolled up and chucked into my bag on the way home. Neat, eh?
Or a pair of fancy pants like Boden's red Bistro Crop available HERE.
And Birkenstocks, of course.
Hi there!! I just pinned Lucinda's picture earlier, I so love how she looks, casual yet elegant xx
ReplyDeleteLove the sweater, but I can't wear it here in Florida for seven more months -- but I will wear that smashing pencil skirt asap. xo
ReplyDeleteThat top picture is a very cool look..,somehow it says relaxed creative professional to me. I am not bothered by the sandals at all. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteShe makes it look so cool...not an easy thing with that many competing patterns and textures. I like your ideas for styling the sweater, think they'd be more workable for most of us.
ReplyDeleteLove the look but not sure I could pull it off.
ReplyDeleteI want to knit that jumper. And I'm very taken with that broderie pencil skirt - I'm just hopeless at wearing skirts because I always feel I must wear heels with them, and I'm always too lazy to wear heels ... Birks are not for me - they make me look like Minnie Mouse or Olive Oyl.
ReplyDeleteI see this a lot in the U.K.: sandals with a sweater, or something warm. I've seen people wearing sandals with a parka in Brighton, on more than one occasion! I don't get it. If it's warm anough for sandals, surely then it's too warm for a sweater???
ReplyDeleteReally love that skirt in the first photo!
ReplyDeleteShe looks amazing, I went out today in just a jumper and jeans and flats for the first time this year, what a small joy.
ReplyDeleteMust be something in the air. Yesterday I resurrected an ancient white cotton guernsey my mum made me and wore it over shorts, running tights and ankle boots, and got loads of comments about 'the look' which was assembled for a quick change at Pilates class! I was pleased as punch!
ReplyDeleteI love the combo of that sweater and skirt - gorgeous! x

ReplyDeleteIt's funny, we are having the same conundrum over here in Australia in Autumn. Difficult when you're sending kids off to school! I do love the casual vibe of a chunky jumper and pants or pencil skirt. And your examples are divine! I am enjoying your easy style in your blog, and although you are far more disciplined, feel we have a similar style. This is my first time commenting...have been waving from afar for a while!
ReplyDeleteAlyson..I dream of wearing sweaters again. In Saigon, I can never seem to catch enough of a breeze to rationalise one. It just isn't the same to crank up the AC. I love the top image..love her style and would love to see the outfit under the sweater.. ;)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your blog, and have awarded you the sunshine and shine on awards!
ReplyDeleteTina L - maybe we're just used to getting cold feet?
ReplyDeleteHello and welcome naturalmedley. Thanks so much for the awards, I'm honoured!
love lucinda´s look!
ReplyDeletebut chunky sweater is very difficult to wear with a c-cup........
Love the color
ReplyDeleteLove Lucinda's style, she can pull off anything!
ReplyDeleteWow this was my best over 50's style picture that I'd seen ! Great jumper suggested. Love this look !
ReplyDeleteI am not going to apologise, I do not agree with all your other responders that this person - Lucinda - looks great. I think she looks like a rich bag lady who is wearing her shower sandals from a left over camping holiday. Just because she works for Vogue does not mean she is 'in vogue'. Blah. If I were to don this atrocious combination it would be because I had either just had A. a stroke and was trying to dress myself for the first time or B. because I had fled a burning building. In either case, it is no excuse to wear shower sandals down the street.

ReplyDeleteI have read your blog and it was really awesome. The way of giving information with pics of cotton jumpers is really a good and understandable method. Keep it up.
