Jenna Lyons and the J.Crew spring collection
I know I'm not the only one to have a grown-up-lady-crush on Jenna Lyons. I've heard the rumours. The 43-year-old president and creative director of J.Crew turned the American label into a global phenomenon by adding sparkle to preppy basics. Think tomboyish trousers for evening and sequins for the supermarket - actually, make that an Elle Decor photoshoot:
Lyons summed up her clever approach to fashion in The Times this week:
'When I think about how women dress these days, I notice how work clothes are too camp, and weekend clothes are kept separate. I think it works best to mix both sides of the closet...I try to think of ways for women to get dressed in an outfit that will work in an office as well as for going out to dinner in the evening.'
And here's a small preview of the J.Crew spring/summer 2012 collection. Sadly, Jenna Lyons wasn't in town, think she's got more pressing matters to deal with:
My favourite piece is this chambray denim blazer with jet beading - apologies for the wobbly photo, think I got a little overexcited:
Denim and Lurex, sequins and stripes. Now that's what I call Casual Glamour.
J.Crew is available in the UK at Jcrew.com and Net-a-Porter - and there's a London shop coming soon. Though I'm not averse to a trip to New York.

J. Crew is a company I hear all the time. Living far from it´s origin, I can´t place the items in any category.
ReplyDeleteNaturally the pictures can fool anybody.
I´d have to see and try the clothes on myself to know their quality. The NAP ones don´t strike me.
I like some of the knits. Wish they were a bit more widely available in the UK.
ReplyDeleteAh such a simo,e decision that has been very influential. Nice pieces and what with Margaret Howell's s/s12 collection, Claris shoes and j crew I'm probably sorted! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm totally obsessed with J Crew at the moment and very depressed that they don't ship to Australia. The range on net-a-p is so limited. Next time I go to New York ...
ReplyDeleteI love the J Crew look, but mostly I like it on other women, especially younger women like my daughter.
ReplyDeleteI'm having a bit of a J.Crew moment myself. So many of their clothes are cut rather long and narrow, but when I find pieces that work for me, they really are brilliant.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for sharing with us!
ReplyDeleteIt's all extremely lovely. Massive girl crush on her here. Have you seen those photos of her house, which is for sale? Utter p0rn. x
ReplyDeleteJenna Lyons has an elfin like quality and a distinctive styl........ but not for one who is short, busty, hippy and pasty!
ReplyDeleteWarm regards.
I'm so envious, I love J Crew but not the inflated UK prices, I would love to have had a snoop around the spring collection.
ReplyDeleteHow unique and creative. We have a store here, so should take a look per your recommendation.
ReplyDeleteI grew up with JCrew and love how much it has gotten all lady sparkly. (We called their clothes "expensive preppy" back in school.) I do wish their trousers had a more refined cut for curvier bodies--so many low, narrow cuts that fit like UO teen sizes.
ReplyDeleteCaroline, No - yes I have. In a parallel universe I live in a Brooklyn brownstone just like that.
ReplyDeleteLove J Crew. One of my first stops when I visit the US. This company has changed so much over the years and have some of the best 'must have' items every year. All thanks to Jenna I'm sure. She has such style.
