Why so colour shy?

My wardrobe is permanently stuck in neutral. Shades of navy, khaki, charcoal and camel create a natural backdrop. And whilst I've dabbled with hot denim, I'm inclined to agree with Christian Dior who once advised, 'Two colours in any outfit are quite enough.' Subtle tones are easy to match, easy to wear and, for the colour shy - like myself - form the perfect, attention-swerving camouflage. Think Emmanuel Alt on a budget, as opposed to Anna Dello Russo on Ketamine.

So, much as the first outfit (from the Milly autumn/winter 2011 catwalk) looks like fun, head-to-toe is always a no-no. I'd wear the scarlet trousers with a camel sweater and the pussy bow blouse and raspberry cardi with denim jeans. Want more colour? Use accessories. Just not those Prada sunglasses.

How about you? Are you courageous with colour - or do you shy away from vibrant shades?

  1. I never used to wear colour but I got some red jeans from GAP and since then I've only had compliments! I agree - start off with something colourful and work on from there. Perhaps a colourful stripey scarf which you could take off if you feel uncomfortable. But, really, colour lifts your mood, even if it's just for the dare.

  2. I do love color..I am posting about it all week. But I have learned not to overdo...I have been learning to tone things down. I love that last picture!!

  3. That bottom picture with the long camel coat is just about my speed when it comes to color. As much as I love all of the color mixes in the J.Crew windows, I know they'd be a disaster on me.

  4. I love color for evenings out -- I tend to be lazy in the daytime and just revert to black.

  5. Navy, black, gray, denim blue, white shirts, army green, certain browns.
I can only wear camel in a coat. I like the "idea" of color, the same way I like the "idea" of prints, but in reality, once they're in my closet they don't get worn. I do buy a few colorful (like brick red) accessories, but that's it. I've learned not to waste my money.
However, I do like it on other people.

  6. I have come a long way in working more color into my wardrobe . . . but I am still a mostly-neutrals kind of woman, with pops of color. My very pale skin is easily overwhelmed with bright colors. I do love the last outfit with the lovely camel coat!

  7. I tried ona white shirt today and...it felt like a lot of coor. "My eyes, my eyes!" but generally, I feel most balanced with no more and no fewer than 3 colors on. Doesn't matter what the colors are as much as that balance.

  8. The last outfit with the camel coat and the pops of red is fabulous! I would definitely wear that. I do love color but I just try to do it sparingly. Great post.

  9. Ooh, I'm loving these pops of color! Don't think I'd be as daring as the head-to-toe look. :) I'm all about adding color with a scarf, a top or shoes!

  10. I do love colour, but tend to end up looking like an explosion in a paint factory if I pile it all on, so tend towards neutrals with a pop of colour.

What are those sunglasses like?! Loads of fun - but betcha MEGA expensive fun!

  11. Hi my dear!! Funnily enough I adore vibrant colours in Summer but my go to outfits for Autumn and winter tend to be neutrals, especially black with a pop of colour in the way of an accessory. Great to see you last night too! x

  12. I used to be all neutrals and black, nothing too conspicuous - then I felt a hankering for hot pink it started with pjs and dressing gown - but once I got used to being so bright at home it gradually broke out into the rest of my wardrobe. Makes such a difference to how I feel. x

  13. I've always been somewhat conservative, too, simply because neutrals are so much easier to mix and match. But I almost always try to have one bit of bright color, simply because it brightens my face! As I grow older, this seems to be more important so I am taking a few more risks. I don't see myself ever doing head-to-toe color, though.

  14. I stick pretty much with black, grey, navy, green in the winter time, with a splash of colour for gloves (my new favourite are mustard yellow leather (see here - http://hibiscusbloem.blogspot.com/2011/10/27-degrees-and-new-gloves.html ). Also a bright scarf or bag. Can't do this colour blocking stuff - way toooo much for most people I think.

  15. I'm "trying" but am still a bit of a colour phobe despite living in Spain, where colour is worshipped. I try to add some colour with scarves, statement jewellery pieces etc. Still haven't quite got to the red jeans etc yet.

  16. Hi again!! Hope you got home ok, it was great to see you and ditto the drunken ramblings from us too, no worries we all did have a laugh!!

Am feeling a bit hungover still- poor you, hope you got to your meeting on time this morning!

  17. I prefer only few colors for myself. Some accessory pieces might have some different color, but I don´t want my things to actually " pop " out.

  18. I love colour but never wore much as a blonde. I'm making up for 40 wasted years now by wearing all of it together. I love those Prada glasses! x

  19. I might flirt with a wee bit of colour every now and again, but my heart belongs to neutrals - soooo much easier. xx

  20. At times, I may be TOO courageous with color. I mix and match to perfection sometimes; others I just run out the door looking like a finger painting project. Oh well! U never take clothes too seriously.

  21. "Anna Dello Russo on Ketamine." that's hilarious! i'm in stitches.

  22. I wear color, but not from head to toe and usually with accessories. I also find that it's fun to experiment!

  23. Hmmm. I go for ages wearing nothing but neutral (or at least very low key) colours, then I decide I need something else. So I have red jeans (but I only wear them with khaki or camel); right now I'm wearing a sunshine yellow J Crew shirt, but with khaki pants and tan belt and shoes, to calm it all down :)

  25. I love your post, dear. You nailed it right. Women tend to stick with what always works, the basics. But being a little adventurous can spice up your style, a lot more.

  26. I have just realised how dark my wardrobe is. But I do like to pop a little colour here and there. Xxxx

  27. I never used to wear much colour because I felt it would be just too difficult to keep up on the accessory side. Now I'm all about the accessories - I actually have navy tights and navy boots. I have green pants which I absolutely love. If I could find a decent pair of orange pants I'd wear them in a 2nd. Black is good, colour is great.
