Style Forever in the Times
Apologies if the blog is turning into a Style Forever Fest - I honestly am flabbergasted by all the attention the book has received and hope normal service will return shortly. Then I can get back to business and tell you all about the wonderful Savage Beauty exhibition at the V&A. Anyhow. The Times ran a feature on Style Forever yesterday which was in the newspaper but behind their paywall, and I've had quite a few requests to share the page. So here it is. That's me the Fashion Maven, never been called that before and can't say as I mind, even more pleasing is the layout putting me up there with some fabulously talented and stylish role models. Most publications want to turn the tips dotted throughout the book into style rules but I'd prefer to think of this as helpful information and expert advice rather than prescriptive rules. As someone who grew up at the tail end of punk, I think we should wear what we please. And as one follower pointed out on Twitter yesterday 'women over-50 like to break the rules!' I'll second that.
I was delighted last night when Manhattan Brother sent me a photo and he'd pinned the page up on his noticeboard at work. Made my day.
Re No 8, I always avoided a sparkly neckline on a top or necklace, (I have some I no longer wear).
ReplyDeleteI thought it would emphasise my wrinkly neck by reflecting the light on to it, especially if a bright day.
Unfortunately, I have one of the faces that I cannot find sunglasses or hats to suit me.
I am thinking of cutting up some 50s curtains in orange pattern and making a shift dress. I had success with a denim shift I made, although I never know if I look good or look older as friends do not say or are too polite to say! I dress differently from my friends! I am still hoping to get a ticket for you event in Bath next week.
You have a right to be proud of your accomplishments! Congratulations...share away and always let us know when you are getting much deserved attention, Alyson! I so look forward to reading your book.
ReplyDeleteMy dear AW, I never took you for the type of girl that required 'Paywall' access...
ReplyDeleteNow crack the whip and get those lazybones publishes moving up the US release date from September 1 or does this require a little Chicago 'muscle'?
You're not only a maven, you're a role model! And I have pinned that very outfit of yours on Pinterest - I bet I'm not the only one.
ReplyDeleteSo looking forward to buying your book! Will you be coming to New York on a book tour??
ReplyDeleteYou are quickly becoming iconic. Come across the pond, dearie.
ReplyDeleteWow how fantastic. Wonder if I can get a back copy.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant - and love the photo - and the fact that it puts you in the foreground. Enjoy the recognition!
ReplyDeleteThis is soooo cool! Although yes, zzzzz at the 'style rules' headline, but it's OK, we know what you mean. I hear the book is on its second print run already....
ReplyDeleteHer Indoors - no, it's a good thing. Get the sparkly stuff out again! And make the dress, it's good to look different - and I'll be able to pick you out from the crowd in Bath!
ReplyDeleteI pre-ordered your book from amazon and was thrilled when it arrived before publication day. It's wonderful - congratulations!
ReplyDeleteExcellent news and after reading the article I surfed Winser, placed my order and it arrived in 24 hours, fab and thanks.
ReplyDeleteDear Alyson, Thank you for being so inspirational! Bought the book and will buy more for my friends! You are a living icon - I often see you in the neighbourhood...
ReplyDeleteHi, haven't managed to make that dress yet, and was thinking of attempting a 'step down' skirt in a crochet style pattern, but only have today to do it as will be coming straight from work tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThat may be the only way you know its me as I may be late, so apologies in advance.
Looking forward to Tuesday!
Very interesting inspiration!
