Inspirational Women: Iris Apfel

Illustration: Leo Greenfield

There's exactly one month to go until the launch of my book Style Forever and so I thought I'd share a little something with you. Alongside all the tips and anecdotes, I've interviewed a series of Inspirational Women including the formidable Iris Apfel. It was a joy to chat to the New York nonagenarian about style and age and other stuff; she's incredibly switched on and as sharp as a decorative hat pin. One of the things Iris said to me was:

'It's hard work getting to know yourself - the biggest fashion faux pas is to look in the mirror and see someone else. You need to know your faults and your assets, you must learn who you are and dress to suit your personality.'

She's definitely a woman who lives by her words and has the most wonderful, bohemian style.

  1. great illustration of IA, all those little strokes of the pen on her dress capture her wit and style, more evocative than a photo...

  2. I was just watching her the other night on a great (and weepy) documentary on Bill Cunningham. Have you seen it?

  6. LOVE your blog, LOVE this post and LOVE Iris. She is stunningly inspiring on all levels and worthy of the acclaim she receives. I first discovered her when reading Mr. Cohen's book ADVANCED STYLE (which I also love and keep on my desk!). It inspired me to write a blog about the "AUDACITY OF AGING" a title that resonates with me, a plastic surgery nurse and wife of the plastic surgeon for 37 years. We have seen just about everything, as one could imagine. I continue to be fascinated by kaleidoscope of color with which each of paints our aging palette. Thank you!
