Inspirational women: Anne Hidalgo

Photo: Telegraph

No clownish dangling from zip wires, taking time off to write books or defend dodgy members of the Royal Family. Anne Hidalgo the mayor of Paris is a woman on a mission to defend the city's honour (rather than selling it off to foreign investors). When Fox News claimed that parts of Paris were 'no-go zones' for non-Muslims and Birmingham was a 'Muslim Only' city, the Brits showed their outrage by posting funny comments on Twitter #FoxNewsFacts. Over on the other side of the Channel, the 54-year-old mayor threatened to sue. Now that the Murdoch-owned station has apologised profusely to France and England, I can't help wishing London had a Madame la Maire.

The Georges Rech outfit in the final picture is on display at the Design Museum's Women, Fashion, Power exhibition. And there's a great interview with her in Vogue Paris.

Anne Hidalgo was born in Spain but has quoted the writer Sacha Guitry,' Being a Parisian is not about being born in Paris, it is about being reborn there.'

  1. Don't think Boris has quite the sartorial elegance.

  2. Quite. Every capital city needs an Anne Hidalgo; chic, intelligent and serious without being dull and dreary. If only.....

    1. While I appreciate her photogenic boppiness, I don't think every capital city needs a socialist in charge. But, vive la France.

  3. Great article Alyson. What a far cry this intelligent, elegant women is from the cabaret act we have currently, who is far too busy playing wiff-waff with other establishment career boys and selling off chunks of London to foreign investors, while the poor workers struggle to find an affordable home. I'll get down from my soap box now and scramble on the Uniqlo site for a little bit of IDLF Parisian chic.

  4. Fabulous images! But it's not only Anne's elegant simplicity that inspires but the confidence, without a trace of brashness or arrogance, that exudes from every pore.

Anna (sorry I keep getting signed in as Anonymous! I'm not computer-savvy enough to change it.)

  5. Brava to Anne! We always say we wouldn't object as much to Fox if they took "News" out of their name. She has great grown-up style, too. xo

  7. She does have great style that starts with her great smile. Smart and confident looks great on any woman...even if their politics are silly as is often the case but GSL is a most patient man with attractive women

  8. A very attractive stylish lady. However style does not mean political savvy, Boris had it in spades!

  9. OlderbutWiser - Boris is politically savvy but it's all about himself. And I think he might be turning into Vladimir Putin - he was on the news last night in Iraq shooting an AK47. Let's just hope he doesn't take his top off...
