Grown-up fashion in Harper's Bazaar

I love what editor Justine Picardie is doing with Harper's Bazaar magazine. The September issue has a brilliant shoot called Icons by Carine Roitfeld with lots of my favourite models including: Lauren Hutton, Iman and Carolyn Murphy, as well as actors, singers and other stars like; Monica Belluci, Penelope Cruz and Lady Gaga. There's also a feature on grown-up fashion written by Lydia Slater (unfortunately it's not online), which says that 'gone are the days when women wanted to look like teenagers- finally the fashion industry has recognised the strength of adult buying power.' All my favourite icons are here too: Ines de la Fressange, Tilda Swinton, Christine Lagarde and there's a lovely quote from Ruth Chapman the co-founder of Matches,' We are finally learning to admire wisdom. The women we look up to aren't young. They have wrinkles and often have grey hair, and they still look great, they have fun. There's something really attractive about a woman who's comfortable in her age and skin.'

Hoorah!

  1. I like this direction HB is taking. Hope it becomes more commonly done in these magazines that after all, appeal to women with more disposable $$$ than the average 20-something. xo

  5. I have been a Vogue subscriber almost all my life but cancelled it recently as just could not take any more of its focus on youth, celebrity, Cara's eyebrows etc.and did not find the fashion features nearly as wonderful and inspiring as I used to.

I want to read an intelligent magazine which recognises that getting older means that I have more time for myself - to dress interestingly and styishly but not eccentrically and to be open to new ideas. . So I'm hoping that HB will be the one - will pic up a copy when I'm home from holiday - thanks for the heads up.

  7. I love Vogue for the artistry of the shoots (esp those crafted by Grace Coddington) but for more realistic ideas on how I might dress myself I read Harper's Bazaar. Wish the September issue came out in August!

  10. I have just found you and I am thrilled with the images and the message. I went grey in my 30s and at 62 I am still stopped on the street by strangers wanting to compliment me on my hair. This blog will be added to my blog's blog list. Thank you for a stunning yet sensible approach to style.

  11. HB is not a magazine I usually buy but I didn't know Justine Picardie was now the Editor, which will change my view. I love Justine's writing and I'm sure she will sprinkle her usual insightful knowledge, sass & witt to the publication.
