Keeping it real simple

While I do love to look at who's wearing what at awards ceremonies - didn't Lupita Nyong'o look fabulous in Ralph Lauren? -  it's January, and unless someone commissions That's Not My Age: the movie (oh who would play me?!), I'm not going to Hollywood anytime soon. Anyhow, I'd rather talk about non-red-carpet-style. Or real clothes for real life occasions. Like The Perfect Working From Home outfit. For me, that's usually a dressing gown, but this is The Year of Grown-Up Glamour and I need an upgrade. I love the idea of 24-hour style: chic, simple clothes that go-anywhere like these jersey wide-leg trousers and the midnight blue, knitted Milano jacket from Winser London. Ideal for slinking around the house in, smart enough for quick business meetings over coffee and no need to change when Mr That's Not My Age gets home and we settle down for the evening in front of the latest box set.

For running around, just add a pair of old school Adidas trainers (Stan Smiths are back for 2014 according to my pal Disneyrollergirl) or this patent toe style from Lanvin if you're feeling flush:

I'm pleased to see Winser London continuing to use more mature models - last year they worked with  Yasmin Le Bon, this year it's the gorgeous Cecilia Chancellor, 47, who you may well remember from her 1980s Elle magazine days.

Do you get dressed properly when you're working from home?

  1. Yes, in the sense I get dressed, but I'd need to smarten up before going out to a meeting!
This is a much-discussed topic on my blog Work from Home Wisdom, and there seem to be 2 camps:
Those (like me) who dress for comfort.
And those who believe you have to 'dress properly' to get into the business mindset.
I had a very stern comment once from someone who said surely I knew I had to be smartly dressed in order to be professional.
And a very funny reply from someone else who said they refused to believe wearing the wrong trousers hampered their abilty to write a decent email :-)
That's the great thing about working from home - there are no rules and you can do it all in your own way.

  2. I don't get dressed properly after I have walked the dog and end up in grotty clothes all day. This is the year of the next decade for me (50) and I am going to be logging in here for ideas. I am trying to build a simple classic wardrobe that I can fling on boots with for the dog walk and then stay in all day. Inspired by those trainers.

  3. I was just pondering my fashion blogging as compared to many other fashion bloggers this morning...I am more into simple, wearable styles like you have shown here. I believe we can look great...simple...classic..chic and be ready for anything! I believe if I did work at home, it would be important for me to dress nicely everyday and be ready in case I needed to run out of an appointment. I also think it would help my state of mind.

  4. Haha - love the model here and would love to think that could be me but know I would end up "saving it for best" and still be in my jeans. I need colour to boost my mood as well as good cat-hair-camouflage so I go for the nicest cashmere I can afford and a silk scarf so I feel a bit luxe but still comfortable and warm. I add fitted jacket and make-up if I have go and meet real live people but I guess what you wear kinda depends on what line of work you're in too.

  5. Been working from home more of late and no, I don't get dressed properly - I shall have to pull my (bed) socks up in that department!

  6. Love this outfit. I am now one year into working from home and am about ready to change some of it - some things aren't working, others are fab, but I do like to look sharp so I need a bit more chic and sharp!

  7. I work from home (mostly) and I do get dressed but not until the morning routine is done (up, tea & coffee, kids sorted and sent to school, yoga). But I do mostly wear jeans, so when I have to go to client meetings, I do have to get a bit gussied up. Love that Winser outfit but a) am too short to carry off that look and b) can't afford their prices (which is OK since they don't do my size). Am seriously coveting those Adidas - I purged a load of shoes last year, and I think it's time to carefully restock :)

  8. I do. In the Winter it's usually jeans, long sleeve t or shirt, and my favourite Denim & Supply, Ralph Lauren wool jacket over the top. Add sheepskin boots and I'm good to go - to my office at the end of the garden. I'm approaching the same milestone year as Karen, so keep the inspiration coming please.

  9. I keep it simple all the time. I have a staple uniform.
Black or dark blue skinny jeans with some detail and white, grey or charchoal tee with a detail designer jacket and some sort of interesting shoe.
I channel Helmut Lang with some G-star and rick owens thrown in for good measure.

This has kept me going for years now. Can do client meeting or fill a web order or go for a coffee no problem.

  11. Some days I do, some days I don't. But I definitely feel better on the days when I make a bit of an effort. I've been known to keep on my PJ's but slap a bit of lipstick on, which makes no sense at all! (I love the blog, by the way.)

  12. I always definitely get 'made up' for the day. Then I Can handle anything. Usual home dress would be easy comfortable, t-shirt and slim pant. Then when I go out I usually just have to change my bottoms and shoes.

  13. Are you able to post a link to these trousers as they're fabulous but I can't seem to find them online.

    Thanks

  14. I'm a mom of teenagers so once I get them fed, out the door and the dog walked, I tend to clean up, read the emails, and then FINALLY get dressed for the day.
So at noon I shower, ALWAYS put on a dash of make-up (raised in Texas, land of big hair and always made-up faces, what can I say?!) And then go with a uniform of jeans or leggings, ts or sweaters and a scarf if I have to go anyplace. Always put on jewelry. Add a coat/jacket and I am acceptable for most places. And if I end up spending the day at home blogging, at least I'm dressed.
Although one of my challenges last year was to spend the whole day in my pajamas. It was harder to do than I thought. Took a good snow day!

  15. I need to step up my game. My at home uniform is leggings and a tee or sweater - but not ready for a meeting! (except perhaps the meter-reader or UPS guy). Love these separates.

  16. Philippa - I think they are either the Miracle pants or the draped jersey Palazzo pants. I'm going to try and send you a link.

  17. Such a fun question and one that makes me laugh because, I am amused to discover, if I will be making important phone calls that day, I need to be dressed. Not full business dress of course, but at least business casual. Otherwise, I'll just wear regular day clothes.

I don't like to linger in pajamas or lounge wear. It IS about mindset and makes a real difference at day's end when I can put on lounge clothes. Really helps my brain downshift.

  18. Sadly, I do not get properly dressed when working from home. If I worked from home more often, I undoubtedly would. I go to a job where I have to wear a uniform, and am only in my clothes for 5 minutes on the way there, and again on the way home. But I dress for that. I guess that's kind of the same thing for me.

  19. I put on sweats first thing, take the dogs out, feed the horses, come back in for the paper, coffee, and breakfast. Then it's a shower and usually jeans and a tee or sweatshirt. I always fix my hair, but no makeup unless I have to run errands, then nicer jeans and a nicer top, maybe loafers or booties. I do like that outfit for the days I go to the matinee or lunch with friends. I like the idea of making a bit more of an effort, but not sure if the dogs and horses notice. Hubby appreciates, though.
