When it comes to scarf wearing, I have a best dressed list. Christine Lagarde, Channel 4's international news editor, Lindsey Hilsum and Borgen's fictional TV journalist Hanne Holme (Benedikte Hansen) are top of the pile.
Recently, I've been wearing the Blog Widower's scarf. A lot. It's navy woven cotton with a tiny star pattern, a birthday gift, and high-time I gave it back. Or found a replacement. The masculine, slightly dandy-ish vibe works well with the Midlife Crisis Jacket, boyfriend jacket and my navy overcoat.
'In search of the perfect scarf' became the theme for my latest blog post for the FT's How To Spend It. First stop on my research tour had to be Liberty: the home of beautiful scarves (who's been watching Liberty of London?), where Ruby Chadwick the accessories and jewellery buyer advised, 'To me, scarves look best when worn relaxed and easy. Best when adapted to your personal style and lifestyle, worn loosely over a jacket or shirt to step it up.' In the women's section of the new J.Crew store, I spotted a lovely men's scarf styled up on a mannequin with a women's khaki combat jacket. The American brand has cleverly included British merchandise from the likes of Penelope Chilvers, Private White VC and Drake's, in their edit. The scarf was from luxury accessories label Drake's, who have a shop just round the corner, off Savile Row:

ReplyDeleteI love a menswear scarf, like the one you stole, um *borrowed* from your husband. And nothing is as wonderful as pure cashmere, but I don't have one, yet. xo
ReplyDeleteI wear scarves all year round but especially in winter. They serve two purposes. Warmth and Chic.
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm living in a small Colorado town where fashion is definitely not at the forefront. (Staying warm is!) but! I I come from Big City Texas where fashion can be a competition. Frequently here I am overdressed-but happy.
ReplyDeleteOne morning after dropping the dog at the kennel, I dashed into McDonald's dressed in jeans and a V neck t shirt with a scarf thrown around my neck. A woman glanced at me, stopped dead in her tracks and exclaimed "O man! I should have thrown a scarf on today." Scarves are such a nice finish-elevating everything else to a step above.

So you did! That's what I get for not clicking through:). I left mine at my dad's the other night, my stepmother MAILED it to me, although they live but 20 minutes away, because I was so attached to it:).

ReplyDeleteI wear scarves year-round with the exception of the dog days of summer. Since I hardly wear prints, I use them to add visual interest. Silk and linen in warm weather, merino or cashmere in colder weather. My mum passed on my Dad's grey cashmere scarf from Scotland. It's a beauty and probably close to its third decade.

ReplyDeleteI've been wearing a cheetah print lately (a gift), but have a marvelous black and cobalt weave scarf I picked up for a song that I'm anxious to wear... and haven't had an occasion as yet.
I admit to coveting a glorious Kate Spade that I absolutely cannot afford, but just looking at it makes me smile - and reminds me to wear my favorite scarves, even if only around the house and entirely for myself.
I have some gorgeous scarves and one of my faves is a deep turquoise shawl that I picked up in a charity shop in Wales for £1. It's a lovely, heavy cashmere and had no label on it. It's huge and doubles as a blanket when i am travelling. I also have a beautiful men's cashmere scarf from Harrods (it was a present). I make cashmere scarves from hole-y cashmere sweaters.

Men's scarves are the best. I've always wanted one of those dotty men's silk dress scarves.
ReplyDeleteI tend to wear mine wrapped once round the neck and then tied in a knot just below my collar-bones. Then if the place I've arrrived at is very cold I can wrap it twice round the neck and tuck the second end through both loops.
... so easy to do, so difficult to describe!

I love scarves - you can buy them without worrying about fit and they just seem to lift any outfit. When Borgen first started I was surprised to see the lady mentioned, wearing a scarf I had bought years ago, Guess where I got it from. H and M.
ReplyDeleteScarves are mandatory winter attire for me. My favorite scarf is from a vendor at the Bryant Park holiday market in NYC. I wish that I had more in every color!

ReplyDeleteJon has a fine selection from a 50p Etro one from a car boot to his vast array of Tootals. Too conservative for my tastes, though, I prefer a feather boa or my Mongolian lamb fluffy thing. xxx
