I'm having a bit of a monochrome knitwear moment. My latest post for the FT's How To Spend It talks about luxury knitwear and, aside from the obligatory J.Crew statement knit, all my choices have a haute-Beatnik vibe. The jumper above is from a lovely Scottish knitwear company called ESK - and then there's my long-term fixation with Bella Freud's sweaters. I'm not alone, Kate and Alexa are hooked on her iconic slogan knits too.

Recently, I’ve become enthralled by the London designer’s concept of Day for Night. The premise of her autumn/winter 2013 collection is described as “getting dressed in the morning while thinking about how that outfit will translate for the evening”. Sounds like pure, casual glamour to me. For replicating that up all night with the Primrose Hill set vibe, there are Bella Freud candles too:
You can read my FT post here. And here are some more noteworthy knitwear moments:
Bardot on a bike. |
Is it any wonder Jean Seberg was Breathless... |
Marilyn Monroe by George Barris. |
love that picture of Marilyn on the beach. A luxury sweater does feel "worth it" to me, as opposed to, say, luxury sunglasses : )
ReplyDeleteIf I won the lottery, one of my first buys would be the Bella Freud 1970 jumper. 1970 - my birth year.
ReplyDeleteI love that striped jumper - haute beatnik is a perfect way to describe it, and shall now be my mantra when buying new clothes! That oversized fisherman's sweater on La Seburg is also pretty fab.
ReplyDeleteI love to indulge in a luxurious knitwear because it feels so good to wear them.
ReplyDeleteLove the pics.
Sue - a Bella Freud jumper is on my fantasy shopping list too. Though I was born before 1970 so it's a toss up between 'Last Poets' and the Bowie jumper.
ReplyDeleteCool post!!!
ReplyDeleteHi there!! Oh yes a Bella Freud (or two) is very high on my wishlist, the perfect sweater, sigh... Hope you're well, have a good weekend xxx
ReplyDeleteI love jumpers and actually look forward to winter just so that I can cozy up inside one! But then I do hail from a very cold country so I suppose it's in my genes. Great post as always. I'll look out for your article, will it be on the a Kindle version of the FT too? Helena xx
ReplyDeleteAs I age and head towards 60 I find myself dressing more in light layers. After your post I felt compelled to dig out a few chunky pieces that I had not worn in a few years as they had seemed to swamp me. I am petite but realised that with my favourite skinny jeans, a smooth scarf and a sharp shoe that I felt comfortable and elegant afterall.Clothes really can be adapted to any age - its just about knowing your body shape.
