Fashion for grown-ups: mid-heeled sandals

Sod the weather, let's talk about sandals. This summer for the first time ever, I'd like a pair in white. With a mid-heel. I know. A proper Mum Shoe. A Queen Mum Shoe. A Mother-of-the-Bride Shoe. I'm not quite sure what's behind this urge - possibly the all-white extravaganza on the Louis Vuitton spring/summer catwalk, or the fact that last week, I had a wedding in Essex to go to. And people, that is not a derogatory comment. Blackpool and Romford are practically twin towns. Essex is a fine British county that reminds me of home, and I love it. Anyhow. As always with a fashion fad, I believe it's best to spend less on something that doesn't fit into the hardy perennial category. For me, it's a toss-up between the sandals from Clarks (above) and Boden (below). Avoid looking too Queen Mum by ditching the matching handbag and pearls and making sure the rest of the outfit is sharp and modern. I'll be wearing mine with my new fancy pants (coming soon), chandelier earrings and navy boyfriend jacket. And should the sun come out, I'm sure we'll see the mid-heeled sandal blossoming at Chelsea Flower Show.

Which pair do you like best?

  1. I tend to prefer the second one, which to my eye looks a bit more modern. But the other would look good too with a very minimalist outfit. Very 1960's Italy.

  3. mmmm, like them both and probably favor the second. I agree with Deja Pseu that #1 would look great with a sleek mod dress.

  4. The first style is by far the more chic and modern. I am Sooooo happy that mid-height heels are in style so I can have comfort and a little height. I agree with Deja Pseu that they bring to mind 1960s Italy.

  5. I also like the second ones best, more graceful heel. And I like the idea of wearing white sandals as an accent with an outfit that has no other white in it. Nice!

  6. The second one looks more casual with the natural coloured stacked heel and gold toned buckle.
I prefer the first with the covered heel, buckle that blends in and lined insole. Much more sleek and modern in my opinion. Looks higher quality as well. Long live mid-height heels!!

  7. I'd go for the first one as I prefer the all white opposed to the brown heel and think it is trendier.

You are so right: Avoid wearing it with a too elegant outfit or accessories.

  9. I prefer the Clarks - more modern.

  10. They're both so similar it's hard to choose, but maybe the Clarks pair?

  11. I like them both but think I prefer the first one. This style is so on trend this year, it's great :). I get swollen feet in the warmer months so a good grannie shoe is real comfy and looks better than flip flops. Katie B @ Minerva Collection – UK Handbags & Jewellery

  12. I'm with the Boden pair. Something about the white heel on the Clarks is more Old Lady to me, but maybe I'm just slow to pick up trends in my old age :)

  13. It's a tough call because they are quite similar, yet I think they evoke a different feel. I like the first pair for it's simplicity and modern/retro feel. Occasionally I'll glance at the Sarah Pacini website (clothes unavailable here) because I like their minimalism. Her spring and summer collections are shown with sandals just like these. To me they look more contemporary than the second pair.

  14. I really like the second pair. The first are risky, I think . . . could read as conservative/frump, although you'd surely get the styling right every time! ;-)

  15. I like the first pair. Which remind me rather of the Sam Edelman Trinas, which I am stalking. As it turns out:).

  16. I have a similar urge this year! Maybe its the fact that the Scottish weather is preventing ACTUAL summer from coming, buy I had a very similar pair IN MY HANDS at a shop the other day, and the urge is strong in me. I will probably cave-in.

  17. As I don´t own sandals, and could not consider ones in white, this is a difficult one.
In some other color, maybe the first ones?

  18. I prefer the first pair being simpler than the other.

  19. I love the Clarks. I don't think Boden gets the heel quite right. The Clarks... to me... get the look exactly right...great with cropped skinny pants or jeans. Or the new maxi dress.
And bty... I've been seeing women my age (56) sporting the maxi-dress with Birkenstock sandals and long centre-parted hair. And I want to shout...nooooo don't do it...the "Janice Joplin at 50 look" is just so wrong!

  20. The Clarks pair are far better in my opinion. Plus they are probably going to be the most comfortable. The Boden pair seem to have been cheapened by the heel colour.

  21. I feel I should prefer the Boden & that everyone else would too but no, it's the clarks all the way for me! :-)
