That's right. I've gone all Céline 2011 and embraced the leather t-shirt. As I've said before, I'm a late adopter and proud. It's one of the good things about getting on a bit. No pressure to be the first to discover new stuff, just let the rest of the blogosphere work itself into a frenzy, wait a while, then stick your oar in. I have to be thoroughly honest and tell you that I didn't actually buy this. When I attended Baukjen's eStylist preview earlier this year, I was invited to order an item from the spring collection. On the spur of the moment, and because I'd just given the super-soft leather t-shirt on the rail a quick feel, I thought why not?
I live in t-shirts, so I'm just treating this New Leather T-shirt (NLT) as a souped-up version. Pure Casual Glamour. I sported the NLT in New York, with jeans, to a Turkish restaurant and realised that it's quite easy to wear, and the same colour as hummus. Now it's getting a bit warmer, I intend to wear the NLT with white jeans and tan leather sandals but it will look just as good with black pants (slim or wide leg) or a pencil skirt. If the classic combination of black and camel sounds a bit dull, throw in some leopard print or a splash of red and Bob's Your Uncle.

The NLT zips right up the back and is easy to get on and off. It's perfect for a cool British summer and much smarter than a fleece. Only thing that concerns me is the hygiene factor and that it is 'specialist leather dry clean only'. Which is why I'm wearing a charcoal t-shirt underneath. Any tips on looking after leather will be warmly received...
Wow, you nailed it! I'm always late to the party too. You also hit on why I'm averse to leather, it's not something you can clean, specialist or however else, weekly or even monthly, so I would also like to know what the normal routine is for wearing and caring for leather.
ReplyDeleteIt looks great though I could never wear it in camel as that colour makes me look dead. Cleaning it would be exactly my worry too, maybe it is a trend for, errr, the more affluent who can afford to have an item like this cleaned every fortnight... You know, just wondering... ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou look great TNMA - love it and actually with the charcoal tee underneath too. Think you will get a lot of mileage out of it this Spring / Summer and also perhaps into Autumn with a long sleeve underneath? Ha ha love the "same colour as hummus" comment too. S x
ReplyDeleteYou look great, you need a slim figure for this one tho' otherwise you're working the over-stuffed sausage look
ReplyDeleteI find the idea of a leather T very odd.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not a practical piece of clothing.
Leather for accessories is ok, but for clothing I´d choose something else.
you know, that's not something I would have considered until I just saw it on you. And come to think of it, the weather here in Scotland is VERY leather t-shirt friendly. Especially this year. You can still pretend it's spring while the leather keeps you from dying of exposure. I'm in.
ReplyDeleteThat T looks good! I was just thinking about leather T-shirts. Why? My cool summers in Seattle. Still trying to figure out how to look summery and stay warm. Leather seems to be a good idea. Like you said, better than fleece.
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I tried a couple of them on but the fit was never right for me.
ReplyDeleteOh, I am SO envious! I've been eyeing these forever (well, since they appeared) and never quite got up the nerve ... Here one could only be warm in autumn/winter.
ReplyDeleteI wash some of my leathers....it gives a great look to them, maybe not with a new Celine tee? But try it if you have an old leather jacket you want to give a distressed look to! p.s. Then into the tumble dryer for a short time, for a slightly shrinked/crumpled look as well! xx
ReplyDeleteI meant 'worn' because it's too warm the rest of the time. Excuse early morning brain.
ReplyDeleteI think you've found an ideal way to wear it by putting a tshirt underneath it. I like the look even though the thought of all those specialist clean bills fills me with horror!
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I agree with Net-A-Dresser about popping it in the dryer but it probably could be hand washed and laid flat to dry. I had a suede T shirt a hundred years ago that I made in a leather-works class and that is exactly how I cleaned it.
ReplyDeleteThose cows that were wearing that shirt before you certainly didn't stop in at the dry cleaners every time they got dirty.
The t-shirt underneath is a great solution also.
As the wife of a dry cleaner, most of the high expense of dry cleaning leather is the need of the specialist to re-dye the garment. The dye comes out in the cleaning process and must be re-dyed to match the original.
ReplyDeleteNancie - that's so true about the cows, hadn't thought about that. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteJack - thank you for your expert advice. Much appreciated.
Now you have me wanting a leather tee. I love the camel...gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, nothing can go wrong with leather, whether it's a shirt, pants, or jacket. Its chic and classy characteristics always give the wearer's body and personality an extraordinary charm. But what is it if not dry cleaned well? The quality of the leather will remain beautiful and in good condition only if properly dry cleaned. _Marion Russell @ MNGreenClean.com
