Emmanuelle Riva in Amour. |
I do like this pre-Oscars time of year, when all the big films are out. Me and Mr That's Not My Age have been to the cinema quite a lot over the past few weeks, and last night, finally got round to seeing Michael Haneke's Amour. Which is superb. I seriously hope it wins an award or two. Rather than giving you a wordy report, here are my Twitter-inspired, 140-character film reviews:
Amour: poignant look at ageing & death. Wonderful acting. Set in gorgeous Parisian apt. Could be a play. Cried. Couldn't speak afterwards.
Life of Pi: loved this. Beautifully done. Better than the book. Had to watch in 2-D so I didn't get seasick.
Argo: brilliant film, still can't believe it's a true story. Ben Affleck is a very fine director, he looks better with shaggy hair & beard.
Zero Dark Thirty: remembered half way through that I don't like war films. And am not interested in who murdered Bin Laden. Sorry Kathryn.
Silver Linings Playbook: both Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper are fab. Very watchable. Uplifting film - though the ending's a bit corny.
Not sure we'll get round to Les Mis and Django Unchained - why all of a sudden is it de riguer for films to be two and a half hours long? Though having said that, Lincoln is next on our list. And I'm a big Daniel Day Lewis fan.
Top scarf action. |
And your nomination for Best Picture is....
really want to see Amour......loved Silver Linings Playbook......have just been invited to catch up with some BAFTA viewings of movies I've missed so can press pause if Lincoln gets a bit much!!
ReplyDeleteWe loved Les Miserables, and the fact I hadn't seen the stage play didn't matter. Fabulous film, although I sobbed for England.
ReplyDeleteSo far, it's Lincoln for me. But I have yet to see Silver Linings, that may become my pick.
ReplyDeleteI have not seen Amour or Silver Linings...after reading your post I will Amour from a maybe see to a must see! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI'm not really feeling Oscar season this year which is strange, but I can see Les Miserables , Life of Pi and Silver Linings doing quite well - I hope Jessica Lawrence gets best actress.
ReplyDeleteThere should be a category just for Meryl, then I would be happy.
Hope you're well x
I'm not feeling Oscar season either, but I have to say ... Daniel Day-Lewis and Morrissey: separated at birth?
ReplyDeleteSince I never go to the movies, I appreciate your recommendations! I like the sound of Amour, although I'll probably bawl my eyes out. I might even check out a few more, too. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI would agree with you on the first two. Saw life of Pi yesterday. Wonderful. Amour very thought provoking, beautifully acted. Would include Quartet in the list.
ReplyDeleteI loved Zero Dark Thirty, it has 'stayed with me' for the last two days, Lincoln was great but a bit syrupy and Argo is on my list for this week.
ReplyDeleteI have seen all but Amour and was told not to go, hmm now rethinking that advise. I must pick Le Mis as it was filmed live and that is something we never see, no dubbed voices.
ReplyDeleteWatched Amour at Toronto Film Festival. As usual, striking, brutally honest work of his, living some room for own interpretation (at the discussion panel, Haneke refused to give us any obvious answers).
ReplyDeleteI loved Zero Dark Thirty, actually my favorite this year. Couldn't bear Lincoln - actually left halfway through. Something so saccharine about it. Actually didn't like Amour much either, was bored stiff. I thought the Impossibles was a far better "foreign" film, but I know Amour will win the Oscar.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your twitter reviews and am now motivated to see Amour. I haven't been going to movies for the past two years, but now I think 'it's time.'
ReplyDeleteThis is the most perfect round up. I haven't seen any of the movies on the list yet. Did see The Flowers of War on DVD at the weekend and it pulled my heart out and stood on it. It was amazing. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteKathy - I'm not a huge Spielberg fan & can imagine Lincoln is a bit saccharine. Maybe I'll wait for the DVD, then I can have an interval/switch off. Will check out the Impossibles too. Thanks for the recommendation.
ReplyDeleteDiana - now you mention it, he has got a bit of a Morrissey chin.
ReplyDeleteDDL is one of my all time faves (along with Cate Blanchett and Helen Mirren) I've yet to see Lincoln- better get to it, chop chop!
ReplyDeleteJust saw Looper- great like neo-noir flick ala Bladerunner, Brick, etc. And that Joseph Gordon-Levitt boy is quite the next Daneil Day Lewis! He's got some great acting chops.
