Style Confidence

I've been thinking a lot about Style Confidence this week. What it is that makes us feel self-assured about our look, and so on. For me, confidence comes from having a uniform of tried-and-trusted basics - usually a pair of slim-not-skinny jeans, a tailored jacket and mannish shoes. Yes, mannish shoes, not five-inch stiletto heels, does anyone actually wear shoes like this in real life? And I think this approach applies to most grown-up women (which is why the Winser London post below received such positive comments). I want to look modern and chic and to stand-out for the right reasons. So part of the outfit should be cutting edge, but not ridiculous. Which brings me onto this Markus Lupfer Lips Jumper (MLLJ) from Fenwick's fantastic new spring collection. It's a brilliant stand-out piece, I know because I've been in-store to view it more times than is absolutely healthy. Though being designer merch, the MLLJ is a bit pricey, so Mr That's Not My Age has suggested I wear one of his old Rolling Stones t-shirts instead. But you know how I feel about tour t-shirts beyond a certain age. Maybe I'll opt for a fresh new shirt and boyfriend jeans instead. Anyone made the transition to slouchier denim yet?

How Style Confident are you?

  1. Being style confident not only depends on my wardrobe of classics, but also on what else is concurrently going on in my life. If I am feeling confident and in control professionally and the rest of my life is humming along smoothly, my style confidence also shines. Unfortunately the opposite is also true............. like a huge advertisement, visible from metres away! Bisous

  2. Being style confident for me means feeling good with myself - which isn't necessarily an absolute everyday thing. My "uniform" - a bit like yours - consists of jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts and cardigans. A great blazer always helps and shoes I can walk in are a must. COS is probably the brand which makes me feel most like Moi. I bought a fab pair of men's Levis last year - they're more slouchy than my usual jeans, but I love them! xo

  3. My style confidence depends on the day...it might even depend on if I got a decent night's sleep...but I am more often than not style confident...because I have learned how to communicate the messages I want to send out and how to avoid any other messages!

  4. Generally, I find that wearing black gives me confidence. It doesn't need to be head-to-toe black, but give me a pair of slim black jeans and a low-heel, pointy-toe shoe, and I'm ready to conquer the world.

  5. I have a friend who has the MLLJ in black - it is fabulous!
My style confidence does depend on the day too. Some days I feel I've got it right and others I feel like I should have never bothered getting out of bed!

  6. A few favourite things make me feel confident. A particular pair of Joan & David heels that I've had for years, a leather jacker, jeans that feel comfortable, a white shirt, Converse in new colours,
I'm switching between my skinny jeans and my sexy boyfriend ones - really like the sloucher style - although the Huzz dislikes both styles and prefers me in a slightly bookcut! Hay Hoe!

  7. Like you, when I stick to my favorite uniforms, I feel confident and don't think about my clothing too much. Love this sweater you're showing, it can jump right into my closet : >

  8. Boots make me feel like Wonder Woman (in a good way). Sadly, that rules out 9 months of the year in Sydney ...

I couldn't wear a t-shirt like that as I'd feel overwhelmed (being both short and scrawny). I love the slouchy silhouette but nervous about making it work on me for the same reason.

  9. I feel style confident in a lot of different ways as long as the clothes fit well, are not silly, and are flattering to my shape. Being short, I rarely wear flats but love medium high platforms (which I've learned not to fall off of) By those standards, i'm afraid the lips T doesn't work for me. I think your guy's vintage rock T would be super cool!

  10. Wearing my old calf- long Moncler down coat with slim jeans, sweater and a great bag makes me feel comfy. I wear the coat almost 8 months a year due to our climate.

  11. For me the process of writing a style blog has really built up confidence. That which I didn't know I knew even though I did know it, has become gospel:).

  12. Are boy jeans very figure-specific? I love tomboy style as you do but a key mitigation against success in my case is a very curvy figure. I tried on Toast's 'new' jeans shape, based on their men's pattern, and looked so much like an elephant in denim I laughed, rather than cried, at what I saw in one full length mirror in the house.

Is there any advice TNMA afficionados can proffer? I love the idea of slouchy, rolled up, softened jeans but wonder if I'll have to cleave to the usual straight but not too skinny template?

  13. My style confidence also depends on the day but also on if I'm having a good hair day :). Truly if my hair looks good I think it ups my style quotient and confidence. Wearing black, along with tried and true stylings make me feel great.

pussywillow, have you considered sizing up in a straight leg jean to mimic the slouchy boyfriend look as an alternative to actual BF jeans. It can create a more slim lined look but still with the more slouchy look of BF's.

  14. Similar to Deborah my style confidence also seems to depend a lot on my hair, which I hadn't really thought about before.
I've also got a lot more style confident as I've got older and learned to work with my body rather than with what is currently fashionable, although somewhat ironically it also seems to have made me more interested in fashion!

  15. I feel most confident in a skinny jean, various tops from chiffon blouses to diagonal print screened tees, (NO logos or skulls, or trendy symbols) and a GREAT looking boot or shoe with at least a 3 inch heel. An interesting well-fitting jacket completes the look and that could be as I am wearing today a Hot Topic black poplin jacket or a black silk baseball style jacket with pleated shoulders or a basic long slender white blazer. I like to experiment with different looks so trying on some sloucy jeans is next.

  16. My style confidence is usually internal, and comes from the pleasure of creativity. The process of putting together an outfit lifts my spirits and propels me out the door.

  18. Fenwick is definitely my favourite store. They have some great unusual stuff.

  19. Hello! My style confidence is knowing and accepting the classic basics that suit me, making the best of my features and enabling me to step outside of that comfort zone to try new things sometimes such as bf jeans.

I came late at 45 to boyfriend jeans and love them so much I got 6 pairs to rotate! The trick for me is to keep them just slouchy enough to look casual without them being baggy as such. I love them so much and on days when my waist decides to explode, these bf jeans manage to disguise it all the same - magic! I wear them with flat lace up ankle boots, flats and even wedge booties.
