Back in more glamorous times, when you could find me running the fashion desk on a glossy women's magazine, boot-cut pants were le dernier cri. Oh yes they were. Magic figure-flattering properties (the impression of longer legs and ability to balance out hips) made this style a firm favourite amongst both magazine staff and readers alike. Unable to afford a pair of Tom Ford Gucci velvet disco pants, I improvised with some fine black needlecords and a slinky Agnés b shirt. I was quite partial to the Gap's boot-cut stretch jeans too. Anyhow. After a decade of muffin tops and skinny jeans, it really does feel like it's time to move on. The kickier (is that even a proper word?) leg shape appeared on the spring catwalk at Céline, and also at McQueen resort - though I think these are more of a bell-bottom myself, but Sarah Mower says boot-cut, and she knows best:

As I still have all my old boot-cut pants stuffed in the back of the wardrobe, including a pair of Marc Jacobs seldom-worn khakis, there's really no need to splurge. If, like me, you still can't stretch to high-end designer prices say hello to Boden's slim boot-cut trousers. They look good with slingbacks, and the good news is, I've got some of those too.
Will you be Bringing Boot-Cut Back?
I like the variety of many pant legs, but bootcuts never flattered me personally. I hated that era, when I wore "stovepipes" which are the old way of the new skinny jeans. And still wear them. They are more flattering. That said, I like this new fashion resurgence of bringing out the classics, like slingbacks, and suchforth. Glad you never got rid of yours- that is one great shoe!
ReplyDeleteI tend to go for a narrower leg, not super skinny but not flared either. Like Bella says, "stovepipes." If I could find a bootcut that was fitted all the way down to the calf, then with just a slight flare, I'd be all over it.
ReplyDeleteBoot cuts have FOREVER been my choice in jeans. I took to them during my grad school years in Montana and never saw reason to stray. This is good news to me.
ReplyDeleteABSOLUTELY ;-) I agree with you they look more like a bell-bottom but as you say Sarah Mower definitely knows best.

Cool, not cool, cool, not cool...not sure right now, still on the fence on that one. I have to admit that the designer versions do look fabulous though - of course ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think what I love about pants right now is that so many different lengths and sizes are all "in." And I love most of them for different reasons...those McQueen pants are gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteskinny jeans took a long time getting used to but i am happy for the boot cut - people look so much better in that than the skinny...just no bell bottoms...
ReplyDeleteI dislike the boot cut, ugh.
ReplyDeleteNot favoring skinny-skinny ones either, the ones that look like leggings.
anything but the skinny leg. Can't stand it, never could. In jeans I'm devoted to the pure straightleg, and in trousers of every other sort either boot or wide leg - I like clothes to flow a bit ... more feminine and flattering.
ReplyDeleteBoot cuts suit my shape (pear :/) so much better but I love skinnies (with a long top to hide the big bum, lol) I'm just about to clear out all my boot cuts but you have got me thinking now, mmm .... Katie B @ Minerva Collection – UK Handbags & Jewellery
ReplyDeleteI'm willing to try anything! It's nice to have alternatives. However, I am in love with the McQueen Jacket!
ReplyDeleteI'll wear them all - I do like the ease of getting a boot cut on and off! Love the minimalist Celine look.
ReplyDeleteI prefer bootcut jeans, but either wide-leg or stovepipe trousers. Something about the fabric, I guess, and so I'm pleased to hear they're "back." As I never switched over to skinny jeans, I guess now I simply won't need to reinvest in what I already wear!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like you would need proportionately (with respect to the upper body) long legs in the first place to achieve the hip balancing effect. Otherwise, assuming proportionately short legs, the boot cut accentuates shortness, because you have to cut off the inverted ice cream cone sooner than expected to meet the hips. A visually disappointing truncation, I would think. I say this as total style novitiate!
ReplyDeleteI've always liked the boot cut - so flattering. So, even though I'm eating, sleeping and breathing in my skinnies (which the Huzz hates and he loves the boot cuts), I do have 2 pairs of 'Kut from the Cloth' boot cuts which look really great with a heel and make me feel tall and slim. I also love a wider leg trouser and have a wonderful black pair with a turn-up from Banana Republic years ago which look so great still. Always with a very high heel as flats just don't work.
ReplyDeleteI like variety so my bootcut jeans and a pair of bootcut trousers have escaped recent wardrobe purges. I don't wear them often but when I do, I wonder why I don't wear them more. They seem flattering on most body types .
ReplyDeleteI admired them on others with longer legs but always struggled to find a pair to flatter my little stumps. Then I found a pair by Carven in a lovely weighty wool with turn ups as well so have been wearing them throughout 2 winters. They flatter many so why not come back?
ReplyDeleteI agree with you - those ARE bell bottoms!
Hi there! Yes I would wear them too, they can be really flattering and mixing your style from straight to skinny to flared to bootcut keeps your outfit options more open!! xxx
ReplyDeleteMy jeans are called "cigarette" style which is a cross between a skinny and a boot. I do not like the sausage look with too tight of an ankle but I do like my jeans to hug my legs. When not wearing jeans I like skirts rather than pants for a different look all together. In the professional world I can see where pants would be best ala Hilary Clinton. Although I think currently she may be in sweats for a well deserved break.
ReplyDeleteCitizens of Humanity used to make a jean called Ingrid that I really liked (went through two pairs, one after the other, over 5 or 6 years) that were called something like "subtle flare" -- the perfect iteration of bootcut for me. If I can find something like that again I'd def. wear them although they did require making a hemming decision that limited to either heel OR flat, whereas I find skinnies more versatile in that regard.
ReplyDeleteI like bootcuts, but I do always feel that I need to wear at least a slight heel with them. As Mater says, the hemming length can be an issue if you want to wear them with more than one heel height - and I am SUPER fussy about the length of pants.
ReplyDeleteBoot cuts, minimalism, crop tops....the 90s are BACK baby!, And nobody is happier about that than me! Some of us never stopped listening to nirvana....
ReplyDeleteI want BIG bell bottoms.
ReplyDeleteBootcuts never left my wardrobe. I just do not suit skinnies. Loved peg trews though.
ReplyDeleteCan't wear skinnies to save my life. Closest I can get is some 501s:). And J. Crew makes great bootleg cords. Highly recommended.
