I'd rather hang out at the Church of Scientology than spend the weekend amidst a scrum of street-style bloggers at London Fashion Week. And really, who wants to look at pictures of the same old, same old anyway? Much better to stay at home and admire the older folks featured on the Replacement Hipsters tumblr. That has got to be the best name for a site, ever, don't you think?

ReplyDeleteAgreeing, that still most of the street style bloggers are too centered on the youth.
I'm really starting to think that it will be the Fashion Week scrum who will get left behind, the real looks and creativity are far away from this scene. In answer though to the comments about street stylers concentrating on the young, there unfortunately is a very good reason for this. If you stop someone middle aged and older, they generally refuse as they are quite suspicious of what you are doing as the young 'uns are very familiar with street style and accept straight away.

ReplyDeleteI think it's the fashion houses getting left behind. As has been said, many bloggers show pics of older people, for example The Sartorialist. Despite this, and despite the fact that older people are the wealthiest demographic, fashion designers and retailers ignore our wants, even though so may of them are older (Lauren, Westwood, Paul Smith, etc etc).
As someone with a business brain coming from outside the fashion world I really don't see the sense in such a short-sighted approach.
Sorry TNMA, I'm getting grumpy with age, but it irritates me.

ReplyDeleteGrey Fox - I hear you. This is something I've been saying for years: the majority of people in this country are over forty yet fashion still focuses on the young. It's crazy.
ReplyDeletePlain Jane - I've had people refuse in the past but on the whole I find older folks are generally quite flattered. Surprised initially, but flattered.
I am hoping that as street style becomes more well known that I too will get older subjects agreeing with gusto. My blog is looking specifically at Liverpool style and like anything it takes a little longer for things to be mainstream out in the provinces. I will however keep trying to get as many older subjects on my blog. Variety is what I am after.
