Ernestine Sheperd: the 75-year-old bodybuilder

'Exercise is like an anti-ageing pill,' says 75-year-old Ernestine Sheperd, the Guinness Book of Records' oldest competitive female bodybuilder. 'Miss Ernie' took up the sport aged 71, runs 10k every morning, is more active than people thirty years her junior, ahem - and looks fantastic. 'When I was younger, I was too prissy to be athletic,' she adds. Personally, I'm worried that my sporting life is going in the opposite direction. Very athletic in my youth, I seem to have entered a middle-aged slump, but seeing this video - and 64-year-old Grace Jones with her hula hoop at the Queen's Jubilee concert - I'm determined to take make like an energetic pensioner and get fit. Fast.

  3. That Grace Jones is something else!! Great photos.
I hit 50 and quickly realized how important exercise is. I was always a good walker but I really need more so I joined an aerobics class at my local YMCA. I love the camaraderie with the others in the class too. Keeps me coming back!

  7. Thank you for this post!! I am age 72 and like to work out everyday. My exercise of choice is ballet class because it is a mental workout as well as physical and has such beautiful music. When not in class I walk and throw in 30 mminutes of weights. I find it is habit forming and if I have even one day off the next day I feel like my muscles are missing something. Do you know of a way to connect with others like the ladies in the video?

  9. Hello Angele & thanks for leaving a comment. It's probably worth contacting a local sports club or local authority to see if they run keep fit sessions for fans of a certain age. And if you're in America, you could always drop Ari from Advanced Style a note to see if he could hook you up with some of his ladies (?)
