Help. I've bought a Barbour!

From Balmoral to Brick Lane, the quintessentially British Barbour has become a national treasure. And now, the traditional uniform of Tories, toffs and Shoreditch Twats has found it's way into the wardrobe of a mid-life stylist. Vintage faux fur coats are all well and good, but they don't have the technical ability of my lovely new quilted jacket - and at my age, a breeze around the buttonholes could be fatal. I'm too old to be cold. My teenage self would be appalled, but at least I've opted for a chic navy blue biker-style and not a waxy green number, you know, like the one worn by HRH and the Countryside Alliance.

Not an attempt to look posh. Or ironic. Keeping up with the Camerons? We're not all in this together. My purchase was driven purely by practicality. With a commute to work involving a twenty-minute bike ride to the train station, I want to stay warm and dry, and look relatively respectable when I reach the other end. I want to look warm and cool. And this Barbour is much cheaper than a Belstaff. Sorry, my official photographer was busy, hence the still life picture. You'll just have to imagine the quilted jacket with navy trousers and brogues - oh no, am I turning into Sloane Ranger? Make that one without a trust fund or an SW7 postcode. Nah. Now that Ines de la Fressange has embraced the hunting/shooting/fishing vibe, (see below) I think I can get away with it.

Tally ho!

  3. I had a Rebel for my birthday and I love it. I've been living in the country for a decade now so thought it was time to get with the programme. I had a lovely time choosing it in the Barbour shop in Long Acre on a hot day in October. Glad I've got it now!

  4. I think it's just perfect for a chilly (cold?) bike ride. And I like the vibe too - you care how you look, but you're not going to catch your death either!

  5. I have 2-3 Barbour jackets. I've had them forever. Not chic ones like yours, the frumpy ones, but I can't give them up.

  10. While this jacket has far too much waist emphasis for me to wear, I really lack its clean, classic vibe. Seems equally ready for urban or rural to me (just like the brogues, right?)

  11. A sensible choice, just like fine wool or soft cotton undergarments - a must when we hit a certain age.

P.S. Apologies for not visiting sooner - I've been away from the blogsphere.

  14. It looks very practical as well as smart!
I am unable to quite bring myself to bin my ancient and no longer waxed Barbour, worn over suits or jeans as befitted my life in the 80s.. it remains a good draft excluder for gardening purposes.

  15. I'm must be getting old too- I like the look of that jacket.

I'm lucky to be living in a place where winter is mild (I wore sleeveless today) and a thick wool jacket is more than enough, but if I lived where there actually was a winter I can only hope I would be as warm and styling as you.

  16. Barbour is SOOOOO popular in Spain with those who try their best to represent the English "hunting set". In fact I bought mine (exactly like yours) only when I moved to Spain, and never owned one in the UK.
They really are warm, durable and worth every penny. Stay snuggly and warm Sweets.

  21. I found your blog through Faux Fuchsia and had a giggle at your post. I just ordered a barbour online last week, I went for a wax one (Kate) amazed at how many choices there are now. I had one many many moons ago, unfortunately it was also the era of velvet alice hair bands and best forgotten. I gave that one away, bad move, everything comes around.
