Meryl Streep does loungewear

Let's ease ourselves gently into the New Year with a lovely photograph of Meryl Streep looking beautiful and Zen-like inside the January edition of American Vogue.  When discussing the shoot, Streep said to Anna Wintour, 'I'm an actress of a certain age and shape. What could Vogue possibly do with me?' They agreed on a relaxed style and natural surroundings, and lo, the 62-year-old became US Vogue's oldest cover girl.  As well as the new goddess of loungewear. In Vince top and Lauren by Ralph Lauren pants.

It's not easy retaining the holiday feeling when work gets in the way. So, I'm going to suggest we use this image to help promote inner calm. Turn it into a screen saver. Much better than a generic palm tree-lined, sandy beach, don't you think? And whatever happens with the economy/Euro/US presidential elections we will have the world's most most talented actress and new goddess of loungewear to help us through.

And sorry, obviously I can't sign off without mentioning Iron Lady. Like most sensible people of my age, I feel conflicted about this movie. Adore Streep. Hate Thatcher. And whilst I know that I should be grown-up and let go of my student-y feelings,  I cannot forget this is a film about the woman who blighted the eighties with marvellous things like the Poll Tax and Section 28 (anti-gay legislation) and said, 'There's no such thing as society.' Anyhow,  Iron Lady is out on Friday in the UK and if I'm still in holiday-mode at the end of the week, I might just check it out.

Rant over. And breathe. Here's some Streep-inspired loungewear:

First stop for easy-to-wear separates, Eileen Fisher - now available in the UK.

Sportier than Streep but right up my strasse - Etoile Isabel Marant sweatshirt and pants.

Or how about a classy navy silk top and wide leg pants?

How are you feeling about going back to work/the Iron Lady?

  1. Streep is magnificent. I always feel too "done" when I see her effortless looks. Love those lounging looks you put together, esp the Vince silk top.

  4. Isn't she inspiring?! Can't help but remember when I first became aware of her, ever so long ago, in Kramer vs. Kramer. She moves from strength to strength -- such a model!

  6. She never ceases to amaze. What incredible presence and beauty!

No Thatcher fan here either, but I will probably see it just for Streep's performance.

  8. I'm eager to hear your take on the movie! Your loungewear photos appears glamourous to me. I love vintage loungewear, so maybe I would like the modern version as well.

  9. What a beautiful photo of Streep! And, yes, it does suggest a relaxed approach to these first days of the new year.

    As for Thatcher, no comment.

  10. Did you see Streep being honored at the Kennedy Center the other night on tv? Wearing her glasses, hair loose, and still so elegant. She seems dedicated to her craft and her causes. I can't think of any role she's played where she hasn't been brilliant - I am curious how she humanizes the Iron Lady. You sampled a good selection of various types of lounge wear, makes me want to get comfy now -

  11. Meryl is just fabulous, I am not very educated with the 'Thatcher Times', however the fact Meryl is portraying such a character, I am definitely going to check it out! I am off to the premiere today to catch this goddess in the flesh!

  12. Here in Spain we don't go back to work until 9 Jan as the 6 is the day children receive their presents here (from the 3 Kings).
I was also a student of the 80's and I can't wait to see the film. I always remember her being called "Thatcher, Thatcher the milk snatcher" when she stopped children being given free milk at school :-(
I LOVE Meryl Streep and can't wait to see her in this film.

  13. I love Meryl Streep, talent aside she's both stylish and beautiful and seems a very grounded and intelligent woman.
Hated Thatcher and have no desire to see the film especially as it seems to focus on dementia and loss and it's all a bit too close to home to call it entertainment. x

  14. It all looks super comfy - too comfy which risks me not wanting to dress up that much sometimes.. does it happen to you too? Lounging clothing can be sooo tempting to wear everyday. And when somebody like Streep promises such style anyhow !!

  16. Agree with you re Maggie ---- I hope this film doesn't portray her too sympathetically to young people who weren't there at the time.

Meryl looks great - love those relaxed yet stylish clothes.

  18. Fashion for Aliens - now that sounds like a much better idea. I'm a big Steve McQueen fan.

Thyme2be - yes, and she looked elegant again tonight at the London premiere, in spite of the extreme weather conditions!

Vix/Gail - that's the problem isn't it? That the focus is on dementia and illness rather than politics and that Meryl Streep will be so convincing, people will feel sympathetic towards Thatcher.

  22. It's sad that Streep has chosen to play that role. You couldn't pay me to sit through it.

  23. Meryl Streep is my heroine!

I love Eileen Fisher. The wide leg pants in the last photo look very elegant but I'm probably too short to wear those. Might try them on though.
