Dresses with sleeves: Helen Mirren

It wasn't going to be long before my new regular 'Dresses with Sleeves' feature got round to Dame Helen Mirren. Back in 2008, DHM complained about the dearth of dresses with built-in arm coverage:

'There are no dresses with sleeves and we need to bring back the sleeve: fine, see-through ones, long or short,' she said, ' There are so many wonderful things you can do with sleeves that people used to do, and then they stopped.'

Three years later, at the Channel 4 British Comedy Awards last night, here's the Dame looking fabulous in Dolce & Gabbana. With sleeves. Which leaves me to conclude that the combination of the grey pound and a new demure sensibility - courtesy of the Duchess of Cambridge - is having an impact on fashion. Anyway. Forget about Kate Middleton, let's talk about Helen Mirren. This isn't the first time we've seen her in Italian designer fashion - and, even though her latest dalliance with D&G involves lace detailing, gloves and a hair style that yells Desperately Seeking Susan, I think the overall effect is very fine. Sassy not muttonous.

Whilst I was watching the TV show, my phone pinged, it was a text message from a friend, ' Doesn't Helen Mirren look fab? Do you think she's finally succumbed to the knife?' But, that's a conversation we'll leave till another day.

What do you think of Dame Helen in Dolce & Gabbana?

  6. she really does look amazing! I hate my arms and get really disappointed by the lack of dresses with sleeves, but saying that, her figure is a lot better than mine *hangs head in shame*

  7. I have been noticing more dresses with sleeves in the high end stores in LA recently (previously home of the sleeveless) ~ Very happy to see it. And Helen always rocks everything, and I don't care if she's had a little help, she looks natural, and that's what matters.

  8. I do like the style of the dress and I am a great fan of sleeves. On this occasion I feel that the dress wears her rather then her wearing the dress. I prefer her in softer colours in my opinion they compliment her delicate colouring better .

  9. Helen Mirren is a star, therefore she can wear the star print.
For the rest of us, the print won´t do any favors.
    Long sleeves = +.

  12. I would be happy to be a sort of male equivalent of Helen Mirren if that makes sense - being herself, attractive and using her age rather than being ashamed of it.

Grey Fox - a man searching for style in middle age and beyond.

  13. She looks amazing! I'm pretty sure she's not rocking the silver hair anymore, though. What do you think?

  15. I realize I have quite a few dresses with sleeves, even though it's not something I particularly look for. I just liked the dresses in general and they just happened to have sleeves!

  17. Grey Fox - hello there, and yes that makes sense. I'd quite like to be the forty-something version of Helen Mirren.

Rock the Silver - I think she's rocking the blonde highlights.

  19. I'm going out on a limb here, despite admiring Dame Helen. The overall effect of the outfit was O.K. but when I blew up the image to have a look at the details of the dress, I was disappointed. The heavy denier tights certainly don't enhance the overall effect. Reminds me of Ed in Ab Fab (Absolutely Fabulous).
    Warm wishes.
