This is London
Readers, I don't know what to say. It's hard to describe my feelings about the chaos and disorder on the streets of London without sounding overly-emotional or trite. But this is heartbreaking stuff. Some of the riots are just down the road from here, so for the last couple of evenings we've had an urban soundtrack of police helicopters and sirens. Not that we're scared for our safety. We're just scared for our city. Poor London. I was planning on meeting a friend this evening for drinks at Frank's Bar in Peckham - but we've decided to postpone rather than see ourselves silhouetted against the burnt-out ruins of a multi-storey car park on News at Ten. So, Mr & Mrs That's Not My Age will be staying indoors instead. And, in a personal attempt to reclaim the city, I've started reading London Perceived by V.S Pritchett. A fantastic book. Which has a quote by Henry James that sums up (better than I can) my feelings for this city:
'It is difficult to speak adequately or justly of London. It is not a pleasant place, it is not agreeable, or cheerful, or easy, or exempt from reproach. It is only magnificent....But...for one who takes it as I take it, London on the whole is the most possible form of life.'
And there's an excellent piece by Camila Batmanghelidjh, founder of Kids Company in today's Independent. It's called 'Caring costs - but so do riots,' and you can read it here.
Normal service will resume shortly.

I wouldn't wish to sound overly emotional or trite, either.
ReplyDeleteBut...
You just made me cry.

All the decent people of this country have heavy hearts today.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear of the turmoil in your beautiful city. I've never had the joy of a visit there, but my husband has a great fondness. Sending positive energy your way. Please stay safe.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more...I LOVE THIS CITY! Watching the news unfurl on TV is too much to bear..so will catch up on your blog instead x
ReplyDeleteThank you for your blog detour. I'm watching the news with a heavy heart in Portland, OR, USA, because I love your city. Violence effects us all, and so I send you peace.
ReplyDeleteI love this city too. That is a wonderful quote from Henry James. I admire Camilla Batmanghelidjh. Thank You for the link to her article. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteAn excellent article, thanks for sharing it. I am saddened and shocked seeing what is happening in my home city (and across the UK). It is shameful. Sadly I feel those committing the appalling acts will never feel any shame. My thoughts are with all the brave forces trying to keep control of the situations.
ReplyDeleteWe've been watching and listening on the news here, barely able to comprehend the chaos. I'm going to read the Independent article now ... Stay safe and know that nothing gets London down in the long term - we've got history to prove that.
ReplyDeleteThat's such a beautiful quote, it could definitely be applied to most of these cities that have been affected by the riots too.
ReplyDeleteBeen watching the news all days and some of the images actually make me sick.
I sincerely hope this all blows over soon, stay safe xoxo
I'm so saddened by this, and hope that sanity and order will be restored soon. Be safe.
ReplyDeleteStay safe TNMA. Thinking of you and of my dear homeland - very sad to see the news yesterday. x

ReplyDeleteDear A
ReplyDeleteI am very sad and can't stop watching it on the telly. Mum is in Jersey and flies in on the w/e. I am worried about her. Poor Poor London. She is being wrecked by thugs. Stay safe xxx
What a moving post. I'm glad you got some calm in London last night. It's not looking good round here. Stay safe. x
ReplyDeleteThank you all for your kind comments. London was calmer last night but their were problems in Manchester and Birmingham. People are deeply shocked and saddened by the disorder - the government need to sort this out, and I don't just mean getting things under control but supporting local communities as Camila Batmanghelidjh eloquently points out.
ReplyDeleteA sad last few days in city I grew up in the late 70s, all 80s. I was there went Brixton went up, but nothing like this. This has been festering for the past 10 yrs I think with the youth. No one gives them a good boot up the you know what anymore like they did when I was a teen. Where all the Mods,Punks,Rockers,Skins,Teddies,Rockers like the old days ? At least we kept each other in order and it gave you a sense of community ! Bring back the mandatory 2 year National Service.
ReplyDeleteBe Safe.

feel just the same - my home city and loved for that reason among so many others - very beautiful quote - my faith in humanity has been slightly restored by the amazing clean up volunteers have undertaken - as someone once said 'all it takes for evil to prevail is for good people to do nothing' - good people are doing something in response to this appalling behaviour and for that we should be thankful!
ReplyDeleteIt's all so upsetting. I can't believe it. :(
