Golden Wonder

Ochre, saffron, old gold, call it what you like, this shade of yellow is the bomb. As a youngster, That Is My Age had a penchant for Double Mustard. One of my favourite outfits was an over-sized Dijon jumper and a cord jacket in more of a Colman's tone - worn with skinny black pants and Chelsea boots. Sounds a bit Brian Jones now I come to think of it, no wonder that woman asked if I was my mother's eldest son.

Anyhow, in a parallel universe where I have some spare change, this autumn the Dijon sweater will be replaced by this gorgeous Day Birger et Mikkelsen blouse. And the saggy red jeans I've been wearing all summer by these fabulous Jaeger trews:

But this time round I won't be doubling up. Best to err on the side of colour caution and opt for the more grown-up combination of saffron and black. Just like in Cy Twombly's four seasons winter painting, which I was admiring only last week at the Dulwich Picture Gallery. So, might as well add that to the shopping list too.

And don't forget Larky Khaki. Remember, Mary Quant recommends wearing military with 'an army of colourful allies.' Mary knows about these things.

What colour will you be wearing this autumn?

Blouse: Day Birger et Mikkelsen
Catwalk shots: Jaeger
Cy Twombly painting: MOMA

  1. Yellow (to be plain about it) is my long-term favourite colour. But I just can't wear it, I'm too sallow, rosy cheeks are needed to pull it off. And Brian Jones is a great style icon for any young girl.

I need to check out the Cy Twombly exhibition, it's in the mental notebook!

  2. I love yellow but most shades don't suit me. Mustard makes me look pasty, which I am most of the time.

I hope all's good with you. I'm finally attempting to catch up with everyone xx

I have just painted my hallway yellow, the walls will glow with welcoming sunshine when summer is but a distant memory...

  5. Oh yes, saffron! I'm going to be looking for pieces in this color. Warm olive too, and rust.

  6. I love this colour, always have. So much so that I painted my bedroom dark yellow when I was a teenager...yes, I know, I was a strange child. xx

  7. I love mustard for decorating, and for shoes and bags, skirts. Next to my face it is pretty deadly. But it is a beautiful autumn color, along with muted olive green, my favorite.

  8. Mustard, camel.. no, no for me.
I guess I will stick to my existing clothes colors. The models might change, but the colors will remain.

PS I saw some Chelsea Girl stuff in our River Island but it was hideously 1980's!

  14. I hunted all Winter to find a mustard cardigan, something to compliment this amazing powder blue dress i wear with red shoes, it's just surrendering to colour. Love Posie

  15. I love those difficult-to-wear autumnal shades, but they tend to flatter me -- if they are more muted in tone.

I absolutely adore this color, and I covet that ochre dress!
