Notes from a sick bed

That's not my bedroom. It's Anna Wintour's summer home in Long Island (she has two) and since norovirus came round to play I've been deliriously flicking through old copies of The World Of Interiors dreaming of the most salubrious place to convalesce. Much better than being confined to That's Not My Age Mansions with a sick bucket and a bottle of lemonade, don't you think?

And to overcome the bouts of vomiting and self-pity, I've been channelling Donald Sutherland's upbeat approach to life and death. The 75-year-old actor has been doing the rounds promoting his latest movie, a remake of the 1970s film The Mechanic, and even though he's now reduced to bit parts in crappy films, this man can still laugh at himself:

'I'm at the time in my life that when I pass a cemetery I don't just pass, I turn in. I turn in and look. I look at mausolems and crypts and stones and cenotaphs. And I realise that I am, in fact, window shopping.'

Going on to discuss how he wants to die quietly in his sleep, ' It's a good way to die, just not for the other four people in the car!'

The NHS says there's no specific treatment for winter vomiting disease, but I know different.

  1. Oh, no! Feel better soon. I think that escaping into The World of Interiors is a great way to convalesce!

That beautiful library in Anna Wintour's home makes me happy and calm just looking at it. I would love to spend a sick day there . . .

  4. I hope you feel better soon. All I wanted to drink was lemonade or Purdeys. I had it for 24 hours last week, then it was a good excuse to stay in bed watching films for a couple of days afterwards to "get over it."

I love Donald Sutherland, he has a brilliant sense of humour xx

  6. Goodness me - you don`t do things by halves, do you?? Speedy recovery to you - get yourself a Kindle if you don`t already have one - I hated mine at Xmas but love it now - you don`t need any energy to turn the pages!A great remedy for vomitting is `Sprite` as opposed to lemonade, shaken until you get rid of the fizz then drink it flat (the Sprite, not yourself otherwise you`ll choke to death!). Settles your stomach, promise....and delegate....a lot!

  7. Love the Donald Sutherland philosophy - how cool does he look.

The interiors porn might be straining you? And I know this isn't funny but I could really do with a slight norovirus whirl - a few pounds wouldn't go amiss. Okay I know that was really wrong!!

Not nice to suffer, get well soon xx

  12. I sympathise! Having just come out of that awful flu myself I can totally relate. You have all the right resources around you. I was flicking thru the new issue of The World of Interiors this morning and it is fab. I do hope you get better very soon and are able to enjoy some more of lifes little pleasures whilst you recover.

    Take care...

    Jeanne xx

  13. What a gorgeous bedroom, it is the clapboard celing that makes it.

Hope you feel better soon. I know it sounds pathetic but I was sort of hoping I would get a vomiting sickness after Christmas so I wouldn't have to work so hard to move the pounds. Silver lining to everything huh ;) x

  14. What a curious quote from Sutherland...people do get more matter-of-fact on this subject as they age.

  15. Awwww, get well soon, you poor thing.
Anna Wintour's house is way more interesting than her hair and rigid personal style. I remember lusting after the collection of Clarice Cliff she had in her office in The September Issue.
Shall I send Jarvis round with a bottle of Lucozade and a packet of Arrowroot biscuits? xxx

  18. Thank you all for your lovely comments. The vomiting stopped, so I dragged myself out today and think I might have overdone it. I'm off for another lie down.

Nana Go-Go & Christina - thanks, I've moved on to Sprite and Purdeys.

Vix - yes, maybe Jarvis could come round and sing to me, though I'd prefer a packet of Digestives!

Young at Heart - amazing voice, well worth getting thrown out of Bloomingdales for!
