The Great British deep freeze is nothing when you've been to the Arctic Circle. Where even though there's very little light during the day, more snow than a Lapland theme park and temperatures well below freezing, airports still function. Madonna and her entourage get fast-tracked off weather-stricken planes, on our return from northern Norway, Mr & Mrs That's Not My Age had to wait. And wait. Until eventually, one single lonely member of Gatwick ground staff let us off. And once inside the airport, I wanted to get straight back on the plane. It was like a scene out of 28 Days Later. Hundreds of exhausted, zombie-passengers, controlled by BAA. No announcements, no staff and even worse, no luggage. After four and a half hours of mayhem, I lay down on the carousel - which like everything else at Gatwick, wasn't moving - to rest.
Anyhow, the missing luggage has just been delivered to That's Not My Age Mansions and I'm not going to let the Gatwick Experience ruin my trip. Here are some pictures of Tromso. Including, my new favourite museum. The Polar Museum. Full of archaelogical finds and tales of Roald Admunsen's Arctic adventures. There's a room on seal hunting - which we ran through with woolly fingers over our eyes.

This is the kind of kit worn by proper Polar explorers:

And this is the kind of kit worn by That's Not My Age. The combination of Uniqlo's Heat Tech thermals, the man-made fibres of my leopard print coat and fabulous new sheepskin-lined boots from Brasher kept me warm and dry.

Here's a close-up of my boots. I never want to take them off.

Capes are fashionable in the Arctic Circle too, you know.

We saw the Northern Lights, they are magic. Unlike my photography skills. Anyway, here's a picture of some lovely clouds.

You don't see the sun during the Arctic winter but the moon is readily available...

On holiday, That's Not My Age loves a local supermarket. I can while away hours just looking at all the regional produce.

What do you wear in the snow?
Love the Viking packaging and the boots!
ReplyDeleteOh my feet are suffering right now, I need a really warm bootee, off for a snoop at yours.
I love the way you look so fashionable in the Artic Circle.

It must have been wonderful, despite the return from hell. I always spend a good while browsing foreign supermarkets as well, not sure why it is so fascinating but I love it.
ReplyDeleteLove your leopard coat and those fabulous boots! Sorry your return was such an ordeal.
ReplyDeleteFew things are worse than When Airports Go Bad.
Love that whole look and the boots are divine!I`m glad you got home safe and sound. I was feeling sorry for those folks who are stranded too and then my eldest rang to say he can`t get home because his train`s been cancelled...something about the wrong kind of icicles bringing down the power cables. I`m at Defcon 3 at the moment and rising steadily...Christmas? What Christmas? A Merry one to you and yours anyway.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, what a wonderful post. I love the faintly ridiculous part of travel, the stuff you really really really don't see at home.
ReplyDeleteAh, leopard print heats up the winter!
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to have seen the northern lights!
ReplyDeleteWhat a nightmare! I'm so glad I don't have to go anywhere. All those poor people trying to get away!
ReplyDeleteYour outfit is gorgeous. Love, love the leopard coat (I know I've said this before) the boots!!! I would love something stylish and practical, two things I find difficult to achieve, the red gloves are perfect. I love leopard and red together. Where are the boots from?
I went out on Saturday night and wore a black jumpsuit with a silver sequin jacket, a cream long hooded coat, cream cashmere gloves and socks and silver snow joggers.
I'm glad you're home and I hope you have a fabulous Christmas. I'm getting super excited now... at long last! xx
Well I love those boots Mrs TNMA - I've been looking for perfect boots and now I've found this company that is great.
ReplyDeleteI so have missed going to Norway of late. It is my spiritual home and that of some of my ancestors! Psst don't tell anyone but I learnt to ski in Norway and a I love Nordic walking!
I have still yet to get to Tromso but can't wait to go. So sorry you had hideous end at Gatwick. Marginally better than Heathrow.
Oh my goodness, yes a completely horrendous Gatwick experience. You poor things. The Northern Lights must have been so beautiful. Love your boots and your coat with the flash of red gloves too. X
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about buying some Uniqlo HeatTech stuff. Is it worth it? I don't want to waste money on something that doesn't keep me seriously warm.
ReplyDelete"The beast" makes an exit! How glam you look. Was a faux fur warm enough? Fab Norwegian pics! I have visited Norway in the winter twice and short of wearing full on skiing gear I found nothing I put on was warm enough!!
ReplyDeleteI find it hard to look glam in the snow - its the shoes really - no heels allowed so I feel a bit frumpy as I never know what flat shoes work (they just seem as slippery on snow and ice as anything else).
Wow, I would love to see the northern lights there... my snow gear involves lots and lots of layering - tights under jeans, long socks over jeans, socks over those socks – that kind of thing!
ReplyDeleteOhh so sorry about the whole airport drama..Its such a mess there..My family had to wait 10 hours for their plane...Btw: those boots are fantastic! I love them so much:) Hugs and kisses, sweetie
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas
Ooo,get you in your new boots! I didn't know Brasher did anything so stylish, must investigate!
ReplyDeleteI won't mention the U word, but I will mention the E word: mostly I have been wearing a neutral pashmina (from Karachi), cream ear muffs, fake pale sheepskin (H&M),jeans & grey Emus. Emus (boots, I mean - nothing to do with Rod Hull!)& their ilk are just the best things to wear in the snow & ice: warmth, comfort & virtually non slip.
Haven't tried Uniqlo HeatTech, usually stick to M&S long johns! Once tried some silk ones from elsewhere, but they just didn't keep me warm.
I recently sent a friend some georgous alpaca socks, which I was very tempted to keep for myself. Will have to buy more for me!
Your style is far superior to the museum pieces. Nice shots of your trip here. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteHi there-wow, what a trip, fabulous photos and I just adore your new boots too-I want a pair, haha!! Wishing you and your family a happy and festive Christmas xx
ReplyDeleteNana Go-Go - hope your eldest makes it back in time for Christmas. My train was delayed recently due to slippery tracks, quite a scary prospect!
ReplyDeleteChristina - your festive outfit sounds gorgeous.
Suzie Bee - yes, I can confirm that Uniqlo Heat Tech really does work.
Veshoevius - Don't tell anyone but I had my friend's padded ski gilet underneath the beast!
Coz - do you think Rod Hull wears Uggs?!
