Femmes d'un certain age and feminism at Paris Fashion Week

JPG photos: Show Studio

It was all parties and protests at Paris Fashion Week. A faux feminist march stormed the Chanel catwalk, with models carrying banners declaring 'make fashion not war' and 'boys should get pregnant too,' and so on. Nil points for sloganeering Karl, but any activity that promotes feminism and equality is a good thing in my book. Which is why I was pleased to see a gathering of gorgeous grown-up models at Jean Paul Gaultier's theatrical swansong; in what looked like a fabulous runway retrospective of the designer's career (the ready-to-wear collection is closing and so this was the last show). While Lanvin celebrated its 125th birthday by using older models including; Amber Valletta, Kirsten Owen and Violetta Sanchez.

Pass the Chanel megaphone, will you: Down with ageism! Three cheers for for grown-up style!

  1. JPG has always been championing older women (and not just older women, but all sorts of oddballs that we don't ordinarily see on catwalk) and for that I love him.

  2. I love seeing older women looking strong and powerful (and not just physically but look at the gleam in their eyes). Amber Valetta looks gorgeous but also comfortable in her skin.

  4. I love their confident looks. Amber V is stunning. KL leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth but he's done a good thing here.

  5. I was trying to work out why the Chanel sloganeering was so irritating? Maybe because real protests are taking place in HK and this seems so silly with the quilted megaphone? Whatever, the JPG and other models are fabulous

  6. anyresemblance - I know, I was in two minds about it at first. But it put feminism on the front pages.Didn't Lagerfeld say that everything he does is a joke, or something like that?

  7. Although I am behind this message, I will never forgive KL for his "fattist" attitude, to me its a little bit like he is trying to get people on board again, Karl, we are not stupid, and you are very transparent! (Literally)lol

  8. Those women are gorgeous, and you can see life lived in their faces and how they hold their bodies. One of the best representations of over-30 beauty I've ever seen.
