After the eye-popping flamboyance of the Advanced Stylistas, let's take it down a notch or ten. Grace Coddington is a woman who sticks to a minimal uniform. Mostly black with the occasional flash of colour, her wardrobe essentials include ankle-skimming trousers, a white shirt, a simple tunic dress, cocoon coat and a pair of comfy shoes - lately Grace is looking ace in skate shoes. There's an interview with American Vogue's 73-year-old creative director in the FT Weekend.
On retirement Coddington says:
'I never thought I'd still be doing this at this age. I've been saying I'm going to leave tomorrow for the last 10 years - but I've had lots of opportunities that would not otherwise have come to me. I could say I was going to leave when Condé Nast moves into our new place (near Ground Zero) but now we are moving in November, that probably won't happen. It's what I do, what I know best.'

Hope I'm still going for the love of it - rather than lack of a decent pension - in my eighth decade.
There was another great interview with Grace Coddington this week, in the WSJ.
She's one of my role models, love her quiet confidence.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind working that long if I loved my job. Sadly, I'd quit tomorrow if I could afford to!
ReplyDeleteNow that's a kind of Advanced Style one can more easily aspire to;).
ReplyDeleteThe aura of Grace...brilliant, talented, creative lady...Anna would be lost without her;)
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend!
She is just wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLove Grace Coddington; loved her memoir. But you can love a job, and still want to leave (aka retire) to do all those things that you have had no time for when you are working.
ReplyDeleteI hear you, Val!
ReplyDeleteVery true, Susan - and she is curating an exhibition and doing more writing/filming. Though if I was Grace Coddington I might want to carry on creating beautiful photoshoots for American Vogue too.
I hope to work until my advanced years too. I worked with Grace for years, she's an amazing woman.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if she can afford to quit - I was shocked by her apartment in The September Issue. Imagined she'd have a far more luxurious space, or at least a more modern one, but it is obvious she is not payed much of a salary. Anna Wintour's apartment was rather humble as well, actually, but at least she gets a radical clothing allowance - something over $250k a year...for clothes alone! Bliss : )
