Matisse: The Cut-Outs at Tate Modern

I've got a severe case of Matisse Mania. After seeing the exhibition at Tate Modern, my head is swimming with colourful shapes and swirling patterns. Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs is a joy. Brilliant, beautiful and full of vitality. The show brings together around 130 works, created between 1937 and 1954, when ill health prevented the artist from painting. Wheelchair-bound using scissors and pins and the help of two assistants, to paint and position paper shapes onto his living room walls, Matisse was prolific in the final years of his life. Crafting simple shapes into beautiful compositions. Confidently snipping away with his scissors, Matisse created a magical world around himself, a new kind of art. The man was dying but his work was full of energy and life. I can't remember an exhibition I enjoyed so much. This is magnificent. Good for the soul. And I can't wait to see it again with Mr That's Not My Age.

Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs is on from 17 April - 7 September 2014 at Tate Modern.

  2. Love his eye for colour and energy. The Matisse Musée in Nice is a great example of the man. Thank you for telling us about the exhibition. I'll have to try to get across to see it.

  4. Did you see the Culture Show special ahead of this exhibition? It was joyous; they interviewed one of his assistants who clearly adored and respected him hugely... I can't wait to see it!

  9. Oh yes! This is on my list! I got to see a few of the cutouts in an exhibition that came to Vancouver quite a few years ago. And I loved the big show at the Pompidou year before last which did allude to his turn, in illness, to the scissors. Can't wait. Thanks for the colourful preview!

  10. This looks amazing! We just saw the Georgia O'Keefe : Lake George exhibit at the De Young. It was gorgeous and my daughter really became quite mesmerized. We can forget about attending exhibitions from time to tine, but I have never regretted attending one.
