The Oscars 2014: outfits you can wear in the real world (and some comfy shoes)

Photo: Daily Mail

And so to the Oscars. Where staggering heels are de riguer and Jennifer Lawrence keeps falling over. Emma Thompson had the right idea when she threw away her Louboutins at the Golden Globes. Didn't Meryl look lovely in Lanvin? Now there's an outfit that would work for a special, non-red carpet occasion in the REAL WORLD. Even better with a pair of CĂ©line-inspired black Birkenstocks or these ponyskin bejewelled sandals from Clarks. Only £49.99 and available here. This Studio Punch style also comes in a fab Marni-esque neon colourway available here.

The late Steve Jobs' doctor says that comfy shoes help you live longer. Dr David Agus told The Times magazine this weekend that, 'Uncomfortable shoes cause unnecessary inflammation that can have an impact on your entire system...Inflammation has been linked to some of the most troubling degenerative diseases today, including heart disease, Alzheimer's, cancer, autoimmune diseases, diabetes and accelerated ageing.' And as Steve Jobs could afford the best around (Agus 'helped keep Jobs alive for seven years') that's proof enough that comfy shoes have life-enhancing properties. But we knew that anyway.

Anyhow. The Best Dress With Sleeves Award goes to Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I saw them play live at Brixton Academy once, and liked her style, as well as her fantastic voice:

And finally, The Best Dressed at the Oscars 2014 gong goes to Ellen DeGeneres. Who looked timeless and chic in a white YSL tuxedo.

Unfortunately Ellen didn't take a Shoe Selfie but I bet she was wearing something like this:

Toast's leather Tassle Derby shoes, £225, available here.

  2. Great post and will look for those sandals, how wonderful to have a reason to be comfortable, re Argus' comments. However we do need to question fashion when it asks us to wear things which restrict us, as in massive heels. I can remember falling off my platforms once too often and deciding to buy shoes I could walk in, this was in my early 20s. I have occasionally given way to shoes that needed a lot of support, e.g.an arm to hold onto etc, a lift to outside a venue etc but when I see friends bunions I am pleased it was only occasional abuse I inflicted on myself.

  3. I loved Ellen's tuxes and didn't she even have on sneakers at one point? I'm right there with you on the comfortable shoes.

  4. And Karen O looks beautiful.
    What a face and hair.

Up with comfort shoes, sensible shoes!

My favorite: Veja canvas sneaker. Just wish I could find them. I wear them with long dresses to parties.

  5. I thought Ellen was best-dressed - all three times. And so at ease in her clothes. For a fantasy dress - Lupita Nyong'o stole the night.

  6. I didn't watch, but now I need to go look at the photos online. Did Jennifer Lawrence really fall down again?

I'm not surprised to hear that about comfortable shoes. That makes me feel better about my shoe choices.

  7. I loved Meryl and Ellen's looks. Angelina Jolie's dress actually looked pretty comfy as well..I think it's hard for them they have so much pressure to look good and yet what a joy to be comfortable during a stressful evening!

My favorite was Jennifer Garner. I thought she looked simple and pretty. I also did an Oscar post and it's so hard to include everyone who looked good.

  8. Carol - Karen O reminds me of you!

Kim - I agree, there's an enormous pressure to look good, but feeling relaxed and comfortable helps.

  9. Remind me, when did Jennifer Lawrence fall? I missed it. It looked like as they were trying to take the "instagram/selfie" she kept pulling up her top, and I thought someone said "boob". I agree with the peanut gallery, Ellen looked sharp, classic, and most of all, had to be way more comfortable than the ones in the stacked heels and stilettos!
Meryl's style always looks so effortless. She's definitely comfortable in her skin and knows what she looks good in.
    Pinks dress was VAVAVoom!

  12. Liza looked fantastic and was wearing comfy shoes. But...don't use Jobs as an example-- he died young.

  13. for me it was hands down cate blanchett. i was so happy she won as blue jasmine was my favorite film of the year. i watched a little clip about the movie prior to the oscars where the costumer said her birkin bag was like another character in the movie. i love little things like that.

  16. Jes - the Times ran a big feature on Dr David Agus at the weekend and said he 'helped keep Steve Jobs alive for seven years.' So it's a positive thing, I'm going to add that to the post.

  17. Constance Leto's hair was fab - nearly made me want to grow mine but I'm more Ellen - she did look great!
    Loved the whole Oscar thing.

  18. I am all for comfortable shoes--my plan in high school was to pair peach Converse All-Stars with a peach dress for the prom (which I didn't go to). However, why does the Clarks US site only have the ugly comfortable sandals, and none of the stylish options of the Clarks UK site?
