Quote of the week: Charlotte Rampling

Photo: Vogue

Alright, I never promised you breaking news...but it'd be rude not to mention this week's announcement that 68-year-old Charlotte Rampling is to be the new face of Nars. How fabulous is that? To celebrate the beauty brand's 20th anniversary in September, Francois Nars will personally be taking a black and white portrait of the esteemed actor. 'I remember Dirk Bogarde referencing Charlotte's 'fabled look' because of the combination of her beauty and withering gaze,' said Monsieur Nars, 'This is what makes her an endlessly watchable mystery.' But Rampling's withering words are just as exquisite:

'This is how I am. I'm still a very attractive woman despite my age - so get used to it.'

What with 64-year-old Jessica Lange modelling for Marc Jacobs' beauty brand, all we need is one more sextegenarian in the city (preferably one with a bit less Botox than Lange) and three's a trend.

Old is the new young. Just remember, you heard that here first.

  3. New tee shirt: Old is the new young! Charlotte Rampling is stunning at any age and a great actor too.

  4. Charlotte Rampling can get away with saying that. If Jessica Lange said it, I'd just want to slap her.

  5. Good news ! I just hope they don't photoshop all the character and experience out of her face.

  6. Val - that made me laugh.

    Parthenope - me too.

  7. Hi... I'm new to your site and I like your premise... since I'm about to turn 65 and I still care what I look like. But I agree NO BOTOX!!! Also... I'm a new blogger for women of a certain age. I'm looking to make connections with other bloggers. Would you be so kind as to take a look? www.chapter2twotoo.blogspot.com

  8. So exciting...you know Jane Fonda was signed last week to model for L'Oreal! Sounds like three to me! All are stunning and it is so great to see our audience no longer ignored completely!!

  10. I like to see women of all ages on advertisements.
However, the march of the 60-80 age models so suddenly surprises me.
Each and everyone of them has had some kind of " fix " done on them - and it shows clearly. And naturally the pictures, before released, are photoshopped.
True about the very young ones too, only on the young faces it does not show = bother as it does on the older faces.

  11. Mette - I agree. It's not very inspiring (or representative) if the only women used are Botoxed to the hilt or have had work done. And yes, then there's the photoshopping...

  12. Here I was feeling bad about my baggy upper eyelids. But if they're good enough for Charlotte Rampling, they're good enough for me!
Now if she had undereye bags too, all would be perfect...

  13. Would a writer submit their first draft for publication? Photoshop is similar in the sense that it is an editing tool for designers. Can it be overused? Of course but it also provides us with breathtaking images that rock our world. Perhaps soon editors will discover the advantages of profiling beautiful mature faces in all their wrinkled glory. Sounds as if some already have.

  14. I think this news is great! Diane Keaton promotes L'Oreal too, or did.
    They are inspirations.

  15. It is wonderful that these major fashion businesses are supporting elder beauty this way, but I'd give anything to see my age group, 40-50's, represented. Those are the women at the height of their power and beauty, living and working in the clothes and styles of our day. But you have to look really hard to see that documented anywhere. It's what brought me to this wonderful site, though there is a strong focus on women my mothers age instead of my age..still encouraging though, so thank you!

  16. Hi Elle - stick with me, I do tend to focus on inspirational women in their 40s and 50s: That Is My Age Group!

  17. I find Charlotte Rampling a really beautiful woman (I am working on my own withering gaze even if I can't match her beauty!) but I am troubled by that "despite" in her quote... Wouldn't it be great to get to a point where women say "I'm attractive because of my age"! xxx
