J.Crew Toothpick Jeans

Much as I like the look of slouchy boyfriend jeans, I still prefer to wear a slimmer leg shape. There's just more mileage in a streamlined silhouette that doesn't feel too tricky and goes with heels, flats, just about everything. Having tried on several different styles and brands in New York, I settled on this pair of J.Crew Toothpick jeans in a coated black denim. Can't seem to find the exact version online but they are available in plain black, white and a lovely vintage wash. Anyhow. I was delighted to see these images of the fabulous Linda Rodin wearing the very same style on Tumblr. Hold on a minute while I give myself a pat on the back...

Snapped yesterday, in-between torrential showers and a trip to the supermarket, this photo feels a bit John Major next to Linda's lovely colourful picture. To be honest, I'm getting the distinct impression that the Blog Widower is not fully committed to his role as my official street style photographer, but who can blame him? The work is so intermittent, it's practically a zero-hours contract. The Toothpick jeans are much better in real life/on the J Crew website. Honest.

When it comes to boyfriend jeans, I've tried several on and they're either too short or too eighties. And anyway, why waste money when I can create the look by wearing an old pair of loose-fitting jeans, without a belt? Which is fine until I have to walk anywhere and the waistband has to hoicked up and rolled over. No idea how kids go from A-B in their low-riding bumster jeans - oh of course, they hitch a ride with their parents.

What kind of jeans are you wearing at the moment?

  1. I am wearing Armani python print skinny jeans today just for fun, but I usually wear Lucky Brand Sofia skinnies - I like them because they rise a little higher in the back, so I am not so exposed sitting down. How low rise are the J Crew matchsticks?

  2. You look great in these and I love the coat!! I also like a skinnier leg on a jean and I encourage women of all sizes to try them...I was surprised that they actually looked good on my curves! I prefer them to the boyfriend jean!

  3. Hi there!! Love the jeans and your whole outfit is great-adoring your coat too!! I'm interchanging skinny jeans, boyfriends, slim, bleached and distressed this winter, can't stick to one style lol!!

  4. I think the ones you're wearing are super flattering - good pick. I've just picked up a pair of very dark raw denim jeans from Zara today which I can best describe as a skinny straight which suits me so much more than a classic skinny shape. I do like my boyfriend jeans though but you're right, I have to hoick them up every now and then but that's not all bad - makes me feel a little bit thin :o)

  6. You look fab, you know how much I love that beast of a coat!
Jeans? I don't. I've some leather skinnies tucked away and I keep meaning to dig them out and make like Saga from The Bridge.
Has Linda nicked my coat? xxx

  8. I never wear jeans, I haven't found a pair which fit properly or flatter so I stick with skirts and dresses, so much easier! You look great in yours though, and that coat is a beauty! xxx

  9. I knew it, jeans again.
But hah, I now have 2 similar pairs of Hugo Boss Orange slim fit jeans.
Btw, I don´t cuff them, which is unusual for me (?

  10. Never could do Boyfriend jeans. I normally stick to a classic straight cut. I think I saw somewhere that "girlfriend" jeans now exist. Apparently they have a higher waist.Must investigate.

  11. I wear skinnies (especially in black velvet) but I also have a pair of old Levis that are a bit too big - so I roll them up and wear them as 'boyfriend' jeans. I'm with you on the adaptability of skinnies - any heel height works.

  12. I love the pic of you in Jeans and that fantastic coat. Just ordered a pair of skinnies from the Gap using this week's special offer from Grazia. I'm a real late adopter as I'm still wearing some Levi bootcut bought in Flordia a couple of years ago. They are flattering and I'll hold onto them until they inevitably come back in style.

Really not sure about boyfriend jeans-they seem a bit too Bananarama for my taste-I'm not going back there again!

  13. LPC - I've seen the pictures and they look fab.

Vix - dig them out, I love Saga's look.

Fashion for Aliens - spooky. I initially said that I felt a bit Bananarama and then edited it out. Hang onto the bootcut, they're coming back (see previous post on Ines de la Fressange)

  14. Almost exclusively in skinnies (J Brand coated black, dark denim J Brand and Citizens) -- I did convert a pair of Denham vintage denims, straight-cut, into boyfriend jeans, having lost enough weight to make them work that way. . . I do add a belt!
I love the way you've styled yours -- I have a cat-print coat as well, but mine's too swingy to work as well as yours does unbuttoned.

  15. If only I had toothpick legs! Today I wore some Lee jeans that I actually pegged myself - they're a few years old and, like you, I wanted a slimmer leg. So I sewed up the seams a little tighter, and I'm so much happier with them now.

  16. the only jeans i own are some lose fitting hotpants (is this possible?) for wearing on really hot summer days outside town. jeans are much to uncomfortable for me - to stiff for lounging, to cold in winter and to hot in summer and when the weather is wet then they get damp and stay damp for hours.
so despite i have the legs for skinny pants i stick with my midi length skirts - mostly wide ones because they take up some space for me.

  17. As Val 5 says, what to do if you don't have toothpick legs??? Size 8/10 body but a dire mix of genes and cycling = shall we say sturdy lower legs. I am SO tired of bootcut and don't like boyfriend . . .

  18. boyfriend jeans suit me as they seem to diminish my fat thighs....but you look fab in your 'skinny's' and as for that coat, wonderful!

  19. The toothpick jeans and the coat look dreamy together. I love photos of you, and this one is beautiful! Keep them coming!

  20. You caught me in jeans today-a black pair purchased in Amsterdam last month on my Christmas gifted shopping trip. Where else can a 6 ft. woman find just what she needs/wants in any boutique she enters?

  21. I'm with you on the skinny jeans. I still love them. Like Materfamilias, I wear J-Brand. I have the dark wash and the black. I just love how the skinny leg looks with low boots, flats, sandals, etc etc. I have long, skinny legs and a very short body. Boyfriend jeans just make me look bigger than I am, cover up my assets and "showcase" that which I'd rather hide!
I have walked down hallways at my school behind toooo many kids with their pants on the ground to contemplate a loose fit!

  22. Love the pictures. I too love J Crew Toothpicks, especially in Ankle and trust me I don't have toothpick legs at 5' 1". Another great jean is the Always Skinny from Gap. Just bought a pair of the coated ones from Gap for $5.00 on sale.

  23. You look fabulous in these, I will have to investigate them. I do like bf jeans for lounging around or having a wine at the local, but these are dressier and nicer. xo

  24. skinnies all the way for me, you have the legs for toothpick, which is pretty essential.

  25. oh are those the new line for j.crew? i mean do they have a bit of stretch in them? they look fab on you and i adore that coat. is it vintage? j

  26. I'm size 12 and have always loved skinny jeans. I tried NYDJ and they were great for a while until they became all stretched out. Old Navy used to carry something called Rock Star High Waisted - they were perfection. Can't find anything that comfy anymore.

  27. the gardener's cottage - yes, they do have stretch and the coat (I call it The Beast!)is an old vintage one.
