Emmanuel Alt, 44, gives good shirt. And that's a fact. I've been thinking a lot about white shirts lately. I have one, I wear it very occasionally, I prefer to wear black or navy. With white jeans. But then I saw the beautiful, new Margaret Howell campaign by Koto Bolofo:
And the Paolo Roversi exhibition at The Wapping Project:

And I tried on my old white Jaeger shirt. Which could be the perfect antidote to my crazy floral pants, don't you think?
The soothing quality of the plain cotton softens the punch of the vibrant print. Apologies for the creases, our steam iron died and I haven't got round to buying a new one. I'm as crumpled as an old French bulldog at the moment, not quite the same as a French Vogue editor but still has a whiff of Parisian Chic. N'est pas?
How do you feel about the classic white shirt?

I like this look very much -- enough, in fact, that I'm almost tempted to try wearing my white shirts again. But I know they really don't work for me, they. really. don't. So I'm resisting, enjoying the white shirt look vicariously. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI love classic white shirts in concept, but they really don't work for me. I did just find one with some ruching that I think can work, but it may be the exception that proves the rule. I love yours with the colorful pants; the straight line pintucks in the shirt are a nice counterpoint to the floral print!
ReplyDeleteI love them...I wear them often. I really love them for any occasion. I think this one looks great with your floral pant! I just believe this is an important staple for any woman's closet.
ReplyDeleteI love your look and I love a good white shirt but I am having trouble finding one that I don't need to wear a tank under. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteI loathe white shirts on me but I love the way yours looks with those pants!
ReplyDeleteok this is fabulous. i love white shirts and i don't even care if they are a bit wrinkled as i hate those non-wrinkle fabrics. you are right, the shirt is the perfect foil to those amazing pants. love the flats too. perfection! i'd live in this!
ReplyDeleteI am still on the hunt for the perfect white shirt - I love your floral trousers and happy to say I've managed to break out and get a pair of my own - now for the white shirt...
ReplyDeleteLike many of the posters above, I adore this look on you, and I run far from white shirts for me. Perhaps I am too messy??
ReplyDeleteI just got the most wonderful white blouse, and it is by Royal Robbins, and is beautiful. And they are made with high tech fabric for quick rinse and hang up to drip dry, for the traveling folk, but while I have to stick close to home, I find Royal Robbins and other 'expeditionary' clothing, really first class for all ocassions, besides being vented, and easy to get yourself cooled of in, without steaming inside some other fabric. You have to try it to believe it.
ReplyDeleteYour outfit looks ok.
ReplyDeleteIn general, shirts don´t appeal to me, definitely not the white ones. Maybe I just have not found the perfect one yet..
White—pure white— is not a great color on me. That being said, the BEST white shirt should look a little oversize, have long sleeves that are only worn rolled up, have tails, a high collar and button all the way to the top (but be left at least two buttons undone). In other words it should look like you have slipped on your man's shirt except for the torso and shoulders, which should FIT. Anyone know where I can get one of those? I'll take it in any color.
ReplyDeleteI had a Gap one for years that I loved to pieces, and have spent years looking for a perfect replacement. Finally found one at Isabella Oliver that fits the bill, and I am beyond thrilled. (no, I don't get out much...)
ReplyDeleteJulie - I'm planning a follow-up post with my favourite shirts and was going to use Isabella Oliver. Watch this space!
ReplyDeleteAren't white shirts for lithe and wiry ladies like Katharine Hepburn? I think they're harder to wear, sadly, for those of us with enormous bosoms. It might be possible to find one to flatter me, but mostly they make me look like a PE teacher who has been forced out of her tracksuit for Parents' Night. If you have any white shirt magic you're planning to share, I'd look forward to it.
ReplyDeleteLove the white shirt with your pants. I'd roll up the sleeves though (Emmanuel Alt) ~ I love white shirts, but I like them a big crumpley, like yours!
ReplyDeleteThe white shirt is THE item I couldn't live without ; it always look good. I wish they would always remain of a nice clean white though ; mine always seem to become a bit greyish or yellowish after a few washes ! I love the pants !
ReplyDeleteI meant : it looks good ! I might be French, but I know my grammar !
ReplyDeleteI have been wearing a white shirt from Mint Velvet nearly all winter with my black skinnies, either with layered necklaces, a waistcoat or under a chunky All Saints cardi. For Spring I am going to dig out my old Ralph Lauren dinner shirt and wear with dark denim straight leg jeans cheekily rolled up once to reveal a hint of ankle above a pair of Converse !!
ReplyDeletethe white blouse looks great with the trousers. The wrinkles you describe aren't apparent to me. I have trouble keeping my white blouses as white as I'd like.
ReplyDeleteLove a white shirt, unironed with sleeves rolled up. Where are those amazing trousers from please? Love them with the shoes...
ReplyDeleteI always wear white shirt since it looks clean and fresh and you can even combine it with other colors without problems. Even our medical professionals prefer to wear white lab coats since it looks more skilled and well groomed.
