How to wear tweed
Shoulder pads aside, my old Ally Capellino jacket suddenly feels very au courant. It was given to me by a very kind friend, who used to work for the designer back in the eighties. And, can we have a round of applause for the Blog Widower, please? This is Mr That's Not My Age's first appearance on the blog, he's usually sitting in the bath taking the photos. But as you can see he's out of the tub/embracing wool tweed this autumn too.
So how to wear tweed without looking like Charles and Camilla? This very traditional fabric can feel quite stiff and formal, so it's best to loosen things up with softer fabrics and casual styling. As Mr TNMA proves, in his mossy green jumper, a flash of colour helps lift a heavy fabric. And I've been wearing mine with a pair of faded jeans and a basic t-shirt. Though recently, I've switched to this stripey Markus Lupfer top, for that extra Francoise Hardy-factor:
Classic brogues and tweed go together like the Monarchy and an unpaid tax bill - just avoid looking like a fogey by keeping everything else modern:
Day Birger et Mikkelsen have gone all Coco Chanel by teaming their lovely women's jacket with simple jersey separates and costume jewellery. If you're feeling the need for tweed, check out Toast. One of my male friends turned up last week looking very dapper in the jacket, below. That's not my friend, that's a model - but the young chap gets away with double tweed because erm, he's young, and his impressive beard lends a hanging-out-with-Tilda-in-the-Highlands, bohemian twist.
Will you be wearing tweed this autumn?
And there'll be no comments about our matchy-matchy outfits, thank you very much.
I have a Zara plum tweed jacket which will be getting another wearing. I just need to find a complimentary t-shirt to wear under it......
ReplyDeleteI've never not worn tweed, and my husband is the same. I know that's it's "new" this year, but it's a classic. Only wear tweed blazers, preferably on the short side, and with tee shirts. I love your jacket, and your husband's too.
ReplyDeleteI love tweed, but not in a complete suit! I wore a tweed skirt today and it will be featured on my blog tomorrow..I love it when I can mix things up!
ReplyDeleteI adore tweed and I'll do a suit too - great jackets on both of you and hello Mr TNMA! I do like seeing men in tweed jackets. I think you used the right word - dapper. Need to get Mr V one!
ReplyDeleteHi Mr TNMA!
ReplyDeleteI've never worn tweed before as I too think of Charles and Camilla. I've seen some nice trendy tweed jackets, and yours looks lovely with jeans, so might give it a whirl .
ReplyDeleteWell that is a first! Great shots!
ReplyDeleteOh I love the old Marcus Luper tee or jumper with the lips, it is a winner and especially with tweed
xx
I'll definitely be in tweed - just need to lose a few pounds before I add to my wardrobe!
ReplyDeleteWarm regards.
Hello Mr TNMA! I do love a man in tweed, Jon's got a fair old collection of vintage jackets, coats and flat caps from jumble sales.
ReplyDeleteThey definitely work better with a contemporary teeshirt or stripes underneath. The landowning Tory isn't such a great look. x
Standing ovation for Mr TNMA! I adore the Ally Capellino jacket and your post has inspired me to be on the look out for tweed.
ReplyDeleteYou both look great! Yes there are some outings up here where tweed is an essential - they normally involve muddy fields alas.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to meet Mr That's Not My Age. You both look great in tweed.
ReplyDeleteI don't have any tweed but I would love the Day Birger jacket but I would style it simply with jeans and t-shirts.
ReplyDeleteI found a tweed Aquascutum skirt in one of our local 'vintage' (read junk) shops for £3.50. It's very checky, very plum and country green, very 100% wool. I have no clue where or when or how to wear it but I couldn't bear to leave it in the shop.
ReplyDeleteLove the jacket with the striped Marcus top! Very chic :)
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for tweed pants. Soft tweed, not itchy, but definitely tweed. Haven't found them yet but I'm on a mission. Never done so much layering (well, not since the '70s), it's keeping me warm and happy. Everyone else is complaining about the cold but not me - for a change!
ReplyDeleteI have bad memories of itchy tweed hacking jackets in the 70s.
ReplyDeleteBut these look really lovely and I shall add 'soft tweed' to my list of Notes for when I get a chance to go clothes shopping!

Partial to a bit of tweed myself - Daks have some lovely soft "non scratchy" tweed trousers this season,
ReplyDeleteVery chic jacket in the first pic. I'm a bit scared of tweed as I worry it adds bulk, but am quite tempted now. xx
