Glad to be grey
Whilst Jean Paul Gaultier celebrated ageless style by sending models down his A/W 2011 catwalk with gorgeous grey beehive wigs, That's Not My Age prefers the real thing. Click here to see my grey streak - and er, super model Kristen McMenamy looking fabulous sans dye-job. So it's good to see that lifestyle brand Toast, who show their menswear collection on models of all ages, are now using older, grey-haired women too - that's the lovely Daphne Selfe above. Hooray!
'O.A.P/A.O.K: Grab your bus pass - the older lady inspires,' said Elle Collections magazine about Gaultier's grown-up models:
Yesterday market research company Mintel tweeted, 'Just one in seven European women aged over-55 consider their hair to be their best feature. Could more can be done to target this group?'
I'm trying to find out some more about this statistic - but in the meantime, what do you think?

Just before I read this, one of my sons was winding me up about a BALD spot he could see on the top of my head. Oh, yeah, go on then, take a picture of it I said. Not nice seeing a photo of my grey hairs coming thru - I only dyed it 3 weeks ago. To re-dye or to embrace? The former I think, like your post last year says, partly grey looks too cat-lady. Although going the 'spensive couture look overcomes that... so do I spend the afternoon reinventing my wardrobe or just slap on some dye???
ReplyDeleteGreat post, I decided a few months ago to stop dyeing my hair and embrace the grey. I have less than 10 percent I think but if I don't grow out the dye now it will be even harder later on . So I currently have a three inch re-growth which looks quite horrid. However I sit here with my hair in a messy bun and a big flower in it.
ReplyDeleteI have a wash out rinse in the cupboard if I do feel the need to smarten up for a particular occasion but I am hoping to stay strong and brazen it out. Bring on the grey.
first, i LOVE the photo of you on the rocks! gorgeous, beautiful!!!
ReplyDeletei'm dreading that stripe down the middle which i know is coming but i'm going to remain strong. i like the idea that mo above has a rinse out color for an emergency situation. i may look into that.
thanks for this posting.

I've been covering my silvers for 15 years, but that second photo is so inspiring - I love, love a slightly crazy, curly grey-haired look! And your silver streak is fabulous.

I plan to go grey gracefully! I have very short dark hair, with a few grey ones showing themselves, and plan to let them takeover as they wish! Funny how older men are very often commented on and admired for their grey / salt and pepper hair, but not so much women. Anyhow, a good hair cut can make all the difference to how I feel thats for sure.
ReplyDeleteVery current topic for me! I too am a mixed bag of blah brown and grey, quite long, and currently blondish. I'd love to go grey but my eye and skin colouring would make me look washed out and ill. So, for the moment, Inoa colour continues! I love that photo of you on the rocks! And all the other fab ladies, so totally gorgeous...~Siobhan
ReplyDeleteLove my hair - I let it go natural several years ago and have not regretted it. It's a dark grey base with natural lighter grey areas - just like highlights!
ReplyDeleteI think grey hair always looks best on older women. That top photo is gorgeous and intelligent.
ReplyDeleteI am a great fan of grey hair however I do think it helps if your hair goes that lovely silver grey (the luck of genetics) and it is important to keep the style current and/or eccentric depending on your look. Lets have more grey foxy ladies on the catwalk as role models.
ReplyDeleteHi my dear-I'm very salt and pepper, which I do alternate between loving and wanting a natural brown, the last time I dyed my hair was last year, so I doubt I'll be doing it again for a while though xx
ReplyDeleteI started going gray when I was 15. Had very dark brown hair so it really showed. Started dying it in college and just recently let the white grow out (It's platinum now. Genetic) Even old friends assume I bleached it. I've never gotten so many compliments!
ReplyDeleteI say let the gray grow out while it's in style and give your poor head a break. :) Just get a good modern haircut.

My hair has been natural for 8 years, I used to straighten it, now its a natural afro with flecks of grey, I love it
ReplyDeleteI just grew out my grey recently, and although it's that 'salt & pepper' - almost white at the temples, mixed dark brown and grey elsewhere - I actually love it. But it does have to be cut ultra-short and I feel better if I also wear a little makeup. I think for me the important thing is for it to look deliberate rather than that I've 'given up'. My hair has always been pretty horrible, and it's funny that now I finally quite like it.
ReplyDeleteI think, to pull off grey hair, you need to have a darker skintone. I think it looks gorgeous on the women above - including you! However, my pink/pale skin and light eyes would definitely wash me out. I'm still coloring.....*sigh*
ReplyDeleteI remember that Kristen McMenamy photo--and thought, wow, my generation has finally come into itself and what great hair!--and I'd never thought of her hair before. I want to be long and grey (I like caring for long hair), although I am only barely sparkling with it. There's an inbetween stage that feels a bit awkward, kind of like being 14 and there but not there.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I've had my grey streak since my early 30s. Frankly, I'm a little frustrated with the slow pace of my greying...and have pondered going grey all at once with the help of an accomplished hair dresser.
ReplyDeleteGrey hair is fine if it suits your colouring... but it does make you appear older you have to make more of an effort with your makeup and colours xx
ReplyDeleteWhen i grow old i will shave my head and keep it all white- it is about time that they show more grey-haired women- Love the post!
ReplyDeleteJean-Paul Gaultier is a genius!

Hello my dear friend, yes we took pics of Bamburgh and many other places to come. I am so glad to be missed too.
ReplyDeleteMuch love.

I take color rinses (in the shades of my own hair color ), going gray does not appeal to me yet, maybe some day, but not now.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the :" Just one in seven.." is true in real life.
I wonder if that one (out of 7) is the only one who has greys!
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying the process of my hair changing; it's a process. I'm enjoying every different stage of life I experience. I had to put vanity and social pressure/opinions into a different gear.
Love the variety of grey that you have portrayed. And your grey streak is very striking.
ReplyDeleteMy hope is that I will embrace my grey. Maybe even go for those snazzy great streaks. I'm kinda looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteI loved the grey bouffant of M. Gauthier but nothing beats the real thing. More grey haired models, yes. I, too, find that now I have substantial grey in my hair (although substantial brown and brassy growing out) that there is a need for a little more makeup. Definitely need eyebrows and a little blush. But that's o.k. with me. It's worth - can hardly wait till its all grown out!
ReplyDeleteI have always rather liked Grey hair and astound my hairdresser by always asking 'has any more grey appeared?' long for that striking streak at the front! I suppose at 48 I am lucky to have hardly any!
ReplyDeleteI said "Hooray!" when my Toast catalogue arrived the other day. Not only have they used older models with grey hair, they've also used young models, too. Young and old in clothes that suit everyone, looking fantastic.
ReplyDeleteAnd another thing...
ReplyDeleteFor women thinking of taking the plunge and going grey, here's a site that may be of interest;

I love my gray hair! Hated the grow out process but loved the end result. I used to use Clairol or Pantene Shimmer Lights fot gray hair...which really made mine shine...but have a hard time finding them anymore. Wish companies would realise we're not all trying to look 21!
ReplyDeleteI am loving the new trend of celebrating our age instead of fighting it- and if grey and blue hairs inspire the younger set: so be it!
ReplyDeleteMy bfriend is grey now- we knew eachother when he was well, a peroxide blond, and I must say it looks good on him, sort of making me look forward to my jet curls growing frosty.
I stopped dying my hair one year ago. Lovin' my greys, they make me feel like a liberated powerful woman..and they make me feel sexy and sassy, OH YEA, Say hello to greys; no more chemical head feeling in the hairdressers, dying my hair only lead to having that ugly line appear every three weeks..start. the. revolution.
