Amber Valetta models for M&S

I've never really understood Per Una. All those ruffles and frills. Far too chintzy for my liking. But hold on a minute, what's going on? Amber Valetta is modelling in the latest M&S campaign - and a pared-down Per Una is being pushed as the go-to label for grown-ups. Modern and slick and not a tiered gypsy skirt in sight. The 38-year-old American is one of my favourite models, ever. She's gorgeous. Who doesn't remember those nineties Gucci ads, Tom Ford's sumptuous mix of velvet disco pants and slinky satin shirts? The Vogue covers? The gorgeous fashion shoots in Harper's Bazaar? Swoon. I think I love her.

Oh and I'm still trying to think of a phrase other than 'older models' to describe my regular feature on models who aren't teenagers. Any ideas?

  1. Seasoned? Mature? Grown-up?

She is stunning. And I love that coat in picture #2.

Which fits in every sense of the phrase!

  3. Love Amber Valetta. That Bazaar shoot with Peter Lindburgh in the 90s (angels in New York) was one of my all-time favourites. Glad Per Una is looking up!

  4. Beautiful woman and thank God Per Una are having a sort out. They have been a nightmare for years. So garish and unattractive lengths. Looking forward to the new look

  5. Indeed, the model is beautiful - but then again: She is
    o n l y 38!
So very young from my point of view.

  6. I don't know... but now that I am past 50, I consider myself "evlolved."

  7. A second vote for "grown up". And sigh, 38 does sound wonderfully youthful - although not in the world of models, I know. She is gorgeous!

  8. In the ballet world an adult is considered age 12 and over with at age 40. Seems same for the world of modelling. I would not consider any model in the "older" category unless she was at least age 50 and up. You could call it New Age Models.

  9. Beldames, maybe? Really, it's time to coin a word and have it forceably added to the English language. There isn't a good one yet for women who have reached their highest potential. Perhaps in another language. (Have you recently looked for another single word synonomous to "macho'?)

  12. Grown up has my vote although Prima Models would be a new spin?

  13. Well, I think we should just call them models and think of referring to the other very young ones with a different name.Sue

  14. How about vintage models? Or "Modèles d'un certain âge"?

  15. Hi my dear-she really is making Per Una look good isn't she!! Having a real M&S moment lately-we had a fab 'dine in for 2 for £10' last week-it really is unbelievably good value! xx

  16. When we lived in London we used to enjoy the "dine in for 2 for £10" offer too. I am visiting London in a couple of weeks' time so may wander in to M&S to check out Per Una!

  17. She is beautiful but, whoever models their clothes, M & S just can't get it right. Whenever I wander into one of their stores I come out shaking my head with disbelief at the amount of dowdy, frilly, just plain awful clothes they try to sell.

  18. I am astounded that noone has mentioned Amber's current guest-starring turn on Revenge my favourite weekly dose of risble US drama while I'm waiting on Homeland starting again. Good as she is at playing someone in a coma she looks a bit more animated in these pictures.

  21. Just "models"? And use other terms like teenagers, younger, girlish, etc. terms for the typical super youthful ones favoured by the industry.
