The grown-up guide to t-shirts


Have I told you about my love of a good t-shirt? The That's Not My Age signature style is the grey marl Track Shirt from American Apparel which I buy in bulk when I'm in New York, and wear constantly. It pains me to put money into pervy old Dov Charney's pockets but it's the best I've found. If you know of something similar from a company that doesn't feel the need to use crotch shots on 60-year-old models, do let me know. Anyhow. Here's Lauren Hutton in The Track Shirt.


Now that we finally have Mediterranean temperatures in London The Track Shirt feels a bit neat around the armpit area, and so I've switched to a slouchier style. Not so long ago, a Vince t-shirt fan (sorry, I've forgotten who it was) asked me on Twitter where to find something similar for less . Mid-range American brands like Vince, J Crew and James Perse are lovely but end up being quite pricey in the UK. So I suggested American Vintage which is a French label and purveyor of very fine jersey knitwear. I have a couple of their t-shirts:



And Gap Pure collection, as I'd recently bought two v-neck tees: one navy and one fluorescent orange. Which I've been layering up. 



And I've just noticed that the tobacco-coloured t-shirt (first picture) is in the sale at Lands' End. I think Lands' End are underrated as a brand - they do have some decent bits and pieces - though that apostrophe does annoy me.

    I love my linen jersey tees from Eileen Fisher, but they're pricey. For a plain tee, Banana Republic are my go-to, one of the few brands I can find that isn't tissue thin.

    Deja Pseu - I have a lovely photo of an Eileen Fisher linen t-shirt which I nearly used but it didn't fit the get the look for less theme.

    Gap, La Redoute and good old M&S for a basic one- I've been disappointed by James Perse in the past, so now refuse to pay over the odds for a basic!

    I love the American Apparel unisex deep v-neck tees. If you order a size smaller than what you normally wear they are a fantastic fit.
    I really like the photo of the Lands End tee. I'll have to check that out.

    I'm in a quest for a perfect white T-shirts, which is not so easy to find. Now Muji has American Vintage-ish tops...

    Margaret Howell does nice Egyptian cotton vests and t shirts.They sometimes give you one for free at the outlet store in York if you're buying something bigger.

    Check out www.everlane.com. Their tees are thin - but I like them. Especially under sweaters.

    I'm no help on t-shirts, but I loved your comments about the apostrophe in Lands' End. I will completely re-write a sentence rather than use a plural possessive. Just bothers me. Same for semi-colons. Start a new sentence already!

    Earlier in the summer (maybe late spring?) Banana Republic had a knit-linen T which I'm really enjoying, altho' undergarment choice has to be a bit thoughtful as they're fairly light.

    I´m not familiar of the many brands mentioned in the previous comments, but my favorites are by Marco Polo and Repeat, when wishing for affordable and ok T- shirts.

    For years I did Petit Bateau, then it was a deep-V American Apparel, now it's all Splendid all the time!

    I still really love the Google Is Ruining Everything shirt. Mine is on its last legs and I am kicking myself for not ordering five or six of them when I had the chance. I've got a half dozen of your other shirts, but that one is by far my favorite.
