Street Style: White Brogues

Always on the look out for a comfy shoe, this morning on the way for a much-needed coffee (I blame Euro 2012, I can't watch the England football team sober) I bumped into Rose Ratcliffe. Local retailer and stylist extraordinaire. In white brogues. Sadly, her feet and ankles are out of focus in my mobile phone photo - Garance Doré won't be quaking in her peep-toe shoe-boots just yet - in real life Rose looks a lot better than this. For a start, she doesn't have cankles, and her flesh is not the same colour as her footwear. Anyhow. Here's a picture of a slightly less blurry brogue. Starting to think I may need to pay the optician's a visit...

The lace-ups are from Danish comfy-shoe-meisters Ecco. The 48-year-old label now has a more directional Fashion Line. Who knew? Rose is practically an ambassador for the brand, 'I've had other Ecco shoes and they're still going 6-7 years later,' she declares, ' So you could say I'm impressed by their durability. Also, I like the fact that there's not too much going on with this brogue. Not a lot of detail. And the off-white colour means I can wear them in winter, with socks.'

As we all know, the brogue and wide-leg trouser combo is the epitome of tomboy chic:

And now for a game of dress-up. Let's imagine Lauren Hutton in a pair with this tailored outfit:

Perfect.

How would you wear white brogues?

  1. I have never owned a pair of white shoes but I love these. Didn't know Ecco were so trendy.

  3. Only way I would wear white brogues is with white wide-leg trousers, that fit fabulously. I think they don't work with anything else. OK, maybe with cream trousers, but that is as far as I'd be willing to go. And I'd go for the look of the men in the Great Gatsby.

  5. I have a light grey suede pair of brogues that I'm really liking for summer, not that we've had much warm weather here yet. Those white ones look especially sharp, and if they're Ecco, they've got to be comfy.

  6. I know the feeling about having to watch England whilst drunk, the agony is almost unbearable.
White brogues, good on other people but too reminiscent of trainers for me! x

  7. Yes I would - but can't find them on the Ecco link?
These are the best looking ones I've seen.

  8. White shoes? For someone else perhaps, but not for me.
I do, however, have nice memories of washing my tennis shoes in my youth!

  9. Ecco is not Swedish but a Danish company.

  10. Ecco ? - wow, they are amazing - I was so surprised! I have a pair of sort of off white brogues with cut out parts - they sound odd but they are really comfortable. Only wore them a couple of times last Summer here in Oz - maybe will bring them back to UK - due a visit late August - hooray!!! x

roughmetaphors - just checking my facts again, now! Sweden is mentioned on the Ecco website & the shoe is called Malmo so I put two and two together...

  12. I do like them & even used to wear some similar many years ago, but I don't think I would wear them now. If I did, it would have to be a la Chanel.

  13. I had a pair of white brogues in college (the early 80s) and I wore them with everything - everything, in those days mostly being jeans and sweat pants pushed up half way up the calf. I loved those brogues so hard; I wore them until they literally fell apart around my feet. I have 2 pair brown brogues now and am eyeing some black ones as well.
